Yes posh boy, eton, Tory

Militantmartha · 16/07/2019 20:21

Middle class boho name made popular by Jude Law. No negative connotations. Raf or Raffy we nn are nice too

HeadintheiClouds · 16/07/2019 20:24

I wouldn’t say no negative connotations, exactly?

NiLunNiLautre · 16/07/2019 20:26

Kid with try-hard, twattish parents.

HeadintheiClouds · 16/07/2019 20:29

^^. Those are the negative connotations, right there

wheresmymojo · 16/07/2019 20:30

I would also say middle class boho name.

I wouldn't have negative opinions of it but it would conjure up a particularly type of family.... into yoga and slightly spiritual new age things, shop at the White Company, lots of wooden toys but drive a Range Rover.

Holiday in Bali but discuss climate change in horror over wagyu beef.

This sounds horribly judgey but I'm not in any way better than this type of family as horrified by climate change and writing this post on a cross Canada road trip

wheresmymojo · 16/07/2019 20:31

I actually quite like it with Rafa as a nn.

LolaSmiles · 16/07/2019 20:31

Kid with try-hard, twattish parents.
I tried to put it nicer than that but I agree. Grin

namechangedforthis1980 · 16/07/2019 20:33

Posh, blond mop of hair

Zoeputthatdown · 16/07/2019 20:36

Gerry Rafferty/Sadie Frost + Jude Law's son.

wheresmymojo · 16/07/2019 20:44

Whatever name people give their children unless it's completely mental they just seem to grow into it IMO.

A close friend called her daughter Molly about 5 years ago and I hated it but now I can't imagine her being anything else.

If you'd asked me at the time what it made me think of I'd have said "poor, harassed looking servant in the 1800s". 🤷🏻‍♀️

1066vegan · 16/07/2019 20:49

Never heard of it as a first name. I thought it was a surname.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 16/07/2019 20:50

The only one I know is definitely not posh and a pain in the arse.

crustycrab · 16/07/2019 20:59

Gerry

Kanga83 · 16/07/2019 21:05

Definitely not posh. Sounds like an alternative to the Finley and Hayden's to be honest.

McShakey · 16/07/2019 21:06

Posh

BeachComber1 · 16/07/2019 21:08

I know a Rafferty.

Last time I saw him, he and his brother Diesel were lobbing deli potato wedges at cars.

Cool name. Someone trying to choose something slightly unusual, but not radically different/weird.

SushiTime · 16/07/2019 22:36

Jewish? Not sure if it is or not but I know 3 that are all Jewish.

DontCallMeShitley · 17/07/2019 16:56

I am in a Jewish area and often hear someone calling out 'Raffy' or 'Rafi'.
Rafi is used in Israel so Jewish, but Rafferty I always thought was Irish.

Then there is Raphael, another one to shorten to Rafi, Raffy etc.

MikeUniformMike · 17/07/2019 19:22

Raphael/Rafael called out to a fat kid in Wilko put me off that one and Raf is the Royal Air Force
Rafferty is a surname as first name.
Rafiq is an arabic name that gets shortened to Raf.

SushiTime · 19/07/2019 11:20

@DontCallMeShitley ah! Yes quite right, all known as Raffi, just assumed it was short for Rafferty but that makes sense.

NationMcKinley · 19/07/2019 11:26

I like it. Don’t know any but think it’s a perfectly nice name

SlipperOrchid · 19/07/2019 11:44

I only know it as a surname. If I heard somebody calling the name Rafferty, I would automatically think they were being called by their surname.

I quite like it. A bit alternative maybe but it could be a bit be a bit of a door to door handyman type name though unless the owner of the name was a very cool type of guy.

I think thats a problem with some more alternative names. Nobody knows if the child will end up being awfully nerdy or really cool and as a result its probably kinder to choose a name that is more of an all rounder.
