What do you think when you hear it?
Is it popular? Classic?
My grandmother’s name is Margo so sentimental but still unsure.

Thank you :)

Love it but think it’s quite fashionable at the moment.

daisyboocantoo · 14/07/2019 11:45

I love it, but prefer the French spelling Margaux.

threadneedle · 14/07/2019 11:50

I love it, my granny was Margaret nn Margo, if I had a dd would have named her Margaux (I love the French spelling)

Apolloanddaphne · 14/07/2019 11:59

My DD hats school friend called Margot. Her friends all called her Madge.

ThanksItHasPockets · 14/07/2019 12:15

Margot is the French spelling.

Margaux is a French village and a type of Bordeaux wine. It has only been used as a given name since Margaux Hemingway changed the spelling of her name, Margot.

It's sufficiently well-established now to be a valid alternative but it isn't 'the' French spelling.

starzig · 14/07/2019 12:41

She wouldn't be margaux really she would be known as Margo with an x.
I think Margot is lovely though (spelling with t well known enough now) it is increasingly popular too so not old fashioned any more.

CalamBalam · 14/07/2019 13:17

Margaux should only be used on a wine bottle. Not a person!

Grufallosfriends · 14/07/2019 14:55

In France the Margaux spelling appears more popular than Margot.

Grufallosfriends · 14/07/2019 14:55

For the girls name, that is

OneKeyAtATime · 14/07/2019 19:31

Not keen I am afraid

Scottishgirl85 · 14/07/2019 20:40

My sister is Margot (36). She had a tough time at school but loves the name as an adult. I love it.

Fatkins · 14/07/2019 22:19

I adore it!

But, I am not sure how much I would like it in the accent local to me, where it would become mah-go.

daisyboocantoo · 14/07/2019 23:13

Well, if we are going to be pedantic, let's mention Marguerite.

And I shall be sure to tell everyone who I meet (in the French speaking country) that they have spelt it wrongly. Hmm

But back to the point, OP, it's a very popular name here, and I really like it. And I do prefer the 'alternative' commonly used spelling.

ThanksItHasPockets · 14/07/2019 23:20

Who said Margaux was an incorrect spelling? Several posters referred to it as if it were the ur-French spelling, which it isn’t. It has only been used as a given name in France since 1980ish (but how interesting to see that @Grufallosfriends is absolutely right that it is now more popular there than Margot).

@ThanksItHasPockets wow...

Interesting indeed.

I quite like it. It is of a genration of names that is coming back round into popularity now, but I don't know of any babies in my area who are called it.
I often think, with names, that fashion tends to hit different parts of the country at different times though.

chipsnmayo · 15/07/2019 00:15

I really like it.

It seems really popular now but ironically my DD went to school with three Margots and she's 21!
