Old fashioned girls names

We want our little girl to have an old fashioned name that isn’t popular. Our favourite bake for a while was Elsie but then we realised how popular it was and changed our mind. Any ideas?

Was there an Enid in the Worst Witch books? And Edna reminds me of the television in Willo the Wisp.

Dorothy, Ida, Aveline, Jean, Henrietta, Marion, Marina, Millicent, Renee, Cynthia, Angela

Indeed they do. Give her the middle names of Bertha and Gladys while you're at it. Just to reinforce that 'ugly names that should have been left in the 1930s' vibe.

LadyGAgain · 13/07/2019 12:44

Mary is beautiful. Strong and soft at the same time. Timeless.

McShakey · 13/07/2019 12:45

@Quintella if you have no suggestions then please don’t comment. If you don’t like the names that’s fair enough, but I do and this is my child.

Exactly. Please be kind to your child. Calling her Enid would be a particularly unkind thing to do.

I don't think so. It's no different than calling your child something very unusual, like Snowflake (and yes, I do know a child with that name). If you don't want to suggest a name then please don't comment, its OP's choice what she calls her child.

userabcname · 13/07/2019 12:50

I really like Etta and Olive

McShakey · 13/07/2019 12:51

As I have said, if you have no suggestions then please stop commenting. We both have different taste and that’s fine, I wouldn’t insult your name choices so don’t insult mine.

This just brought to mind the story my Mum tells about my Grandmother. She ran into some relatives while out with her new baby (my Mum) who said "here she is, well we know what you have called her" and my Gran said, really, have you heard? They said well of course she's Nellie after your late Mum. My Gran responded with I have NOT, I got saddled with Edna and I'm not doing that to this one, I've called her Susan because I like it! It was 1946, peak Susan.

Martha. I said to DH last night I don't understand how it never made a comeback alongside the Elsie's etc. It's a beautiful name

Quintella · 13/07/2019 12:55

Granny Edna sounds like she was a sensible woman, Rayna!

Tbf OP, open and honest discussions on names is part of the charm of this section - you can’t stop people commenting.Grin

I like Rita, Betty, Annie and Dorothy if that helps at all!

anothernotherone · 13/07/2019 12:56

Elisabeth.

Elsie ist a diminutive of Elisabeth so you could still use Elsie, or Betty, or Lizzy, or Beth, depending upon what develops naturally or what turns out to be popular or unusual locally.

There are some lovely suggestions on here, I do know of a Martha or two. I do remember my Mum (Susan!) refused to believe the neighbours had called their new baby Winnifred until she heard it from them herself and my friend's Dad thought his granddaughter Molly had a ridiculous name not knowing that was pretty normal now. Things move on.

McShakey this is not the kind of forum where being the original poster/ thread starter gives you the right to tell people not to post. It's the kind of forum where there is robust discussion. That's the style of the site. If you need to be the thread police and only wish to hear from only want to read posts from sycophants this is not the forum for you.

I’ve got no issue with people saying they dislike a name. But there was nothing helpful from that previous poster, and at first I didn’t tell them not to post but they carried on being rude. It wasn’t helping me get suggestions on names, so I asked them if they had no suggestions not to post as we clearly had different opinions on a name. I understand the nature of this site.
