Welsh girls names that work in England

My partner and I are both (North) Welsh but living in England, I’m pregnant with twin girls and so far have been pretty useless in thinking of names...

We’re looking for names that are easy to pronounce by non Welsh speakers and also don’t look like we’ve spelt it wrong just to be ‘interesting’!

I’m not a fan of names like Seren or Enfys.

I don’t really mind names that are seen as a bit dated (but on the other hand lots of names that were common in my generation are names of people I was in school with and didn’t get on with!)

Help!!

Mike - Eiry is pronounced Eye-ree and Rhian as Ree-ann (a bit like Rhiannon but with out the non).

I'm English and have a Meredith- people are always commenting on how much they like it and how unusual it is.

ThighsRelief · 24/07/2019 01:03

I heard a Welsh couple saying they were going to name their boy something like Meredith. I think it was MehREDydd (kind of).

Love Lowri and Siwan.

MUM I've seen you say you think Begw is sweet before - all i can work out though is Begoo?

WashingMyHair247 · 24/07/2019 01:34

Bethan, Mali, Lowri, Gwen, Gwenneth, Mair, Eira.....

Mine is Dwynwen. After Santes Dwynwen.

WashingMyHair247 · 24/07/2019 01:35

@ThighsRelief was it Merion? My-REE-un

ThighsRelief · 24/07/2019 08:38

Hair possibly, but i thought it sounded more like Meredith. They called him Huw in the end!

Mopmum35 · 24/07/2019 09:25

My daughter is called Rhian and we pronounce it Ree-un.

MikeUniformMike · 24/07/2019 18:29

tabbie - that's not the correct Welsh pronunciation of either of them.
Eiry is nearer Eh-ree and Rhian doesn't have an r in it. RH is a letter and a sound in it's own right.

Meredydd is a boy's name, pronounced Merr-ED-ith (ith like in with or wither).
It was anglicised as Meredith as a surname, and is now used for girls. Meredydd is still a boy's name.

Gwenneth is awful. It is Gwyneth. Gwenith, Gwennol and Gwylan are sometimes used as girl's names. Gwenno is nice and quite popular.

Meirion is a boy's name - very dated. It's nearer Mayrr-yon but you might hear Merrion or My-ryon.

Siwan is very pretty but there are two welsh pronunciations - SI-wann and SHEWann. It is Welsh for Joan.

Begw is pronounced BEG-ou . I think it's short for Margaret but I might me wrong. There is also Nanw (NAN-ou), In the past girls named Something Ann were sometimes known as Nan, so it was a longer form of Nan.

Lol! I have only just seen this thread, but I came on to say Alys, Catrin, Megan and Bethan.

MikeUniformMike · 24/07/2019 18:59

Someone upthread said that Alys was pronounced Ay-liss.
Megan will be like Meghan Markle - meggun
Bethan will be Beth-un
Catrin will be Catryn.

None of them are too bad.
Meg and Beth would be absolutely fine.

BikeRunSki · 27/07/2019 14:42

I know three Alys es.
2 pronounce their name as Alice (1 from W Wales, 1from Yorkshire).
1 as Ai-lish (age is from N Wales)

I don’t know if where they come from has any bearing on how they pronounce their names.

MikeUniformMike · 27/07/2019 14:49

Alys in N Wales is pronounced Alice. The Ailish pronunciation is not Welsh. It would be written Eilish or possibly Eilis, which is not a welsh name.

PhillipeFellope · 12/08/2019 00:03

I know a little girl called Deryn.

Anwen is one of my favourites. So is Ffion. Dh won't entertain Welsh names.

PhillipeFellope · 12/08/2019 00:04
