Currently in the running are Elmer and Emory, but I can't think of nicknames for these?

Is Elmer not a patchwork elephant?

tiredmummylife · 11/07/2019 09:15

Yes, but also a traditional English name meaning noble.

Popular in America and Scandinavia.

Imo a nickname will form naturally. I know it's trendy but I still find it so strange to plan a nickname in advance. If you want a diminutive otoh then I'm not aware of any for Elmer (except Elmo perhaps) and Emory.

I also think is strange to plan nicknames.

Elmer is ok

Emory is like the board using fur filing nails

Rosiesandposies1 · 11/07/2019 12:15

Nicknames will come from his friends, not parents (they normally drop ‘parent’ ones according to several teachers I know).

Love Elmer! Strong, classic, memorable and not overused!

Why would you even want to shorten it? It's a beautiful name that's so easy to say and spell!

Lavenderblues · 11/07/2019 14:11

Agree that the recent trend of 'planning' a nickname is odd Confused! Maybe it's not the right name if you feel the need for a nickname?!

Well I totally understand the need to consider nickname possibilities too! And don't feel bad about it! Wink

I found these names on the British Baby Names website, which has a list called 'Long Lost Rareties'. And other fab lists worth checking out.

Hasten
Bosten
Kenting
Othin

BUT, I really think you need to imagine carrying whatever name you give him through life. I went to school with a boy who was very awkward and covered in zits and had an awful stutter, and life for him was made much harder by the fact that he was called Jotham, or something (cant remember it exactly now).
Good luck Smile
