Anastasia Pronunciation

I'm really considering Anastasia as name for second daughter.

I thought it was pronounced ana-stay-see-a

But I've been hearing Ana-stay-ja/sha (end bit sounds like Asia)

I prefer first pronunciation. Do you think people would stick to it at school etc if told how to pronounce it or do you think she would get called by second one?

Thanks!

Yes it pronounced ana-stay-see-a but if you say it quickly it becomes ana stay sha. It effectively loses a syllable.

Lavenderblues · 10/07/2019 09:23

Probably how Asia went from A see a to A sha.

kittytiggy · 10/07/2019 09:39

What @Lavenderblues said!

ArnoldBee · 10/07/2019 09:45

I've always pronounced it Anna-star-sia after many tv programmes on the last Tsar.

TatianaLarina · 10/07/2019 10:45

It can be pronounced stay or star.

It’s also pronounced anasta SEE a.

abiirthdaycake · 10/07/2019 11:54

I'd say anna-stah-see-ah!

TurquoiseAndPurple · 10/07/2019 17:36

I would agree with Lavender

I think most British people would pronounce it Ana-st-Asia at first glance but would get the hang of it quickly enough. Anna-Stascia is much nicer!

(I've known a Stascia my entire life and didn't realise until she was 25 that her name was actually Anastasia!)

soundsystem · 10/07/2019 19:23

Oh sorry just figures out how it want people to pronounce it! Still think people would go with what you tell them

Fatkins · 10/07/2019 20:45

I think it's meant to be Anna-stass-ee-ah is it not? In Russian I mean.

I would always check with the parents / the Anastasia though as I have also heard it pronounced anna-stay-jah and Anna-stay-zee-ah.

BogglesGoggles · 10/07/2019 20:48

Ah/na/sta/see-ia is the Russian
An/a/stay/ja is the English

BogglesGoggles · 10/07/2019 20:49

@Fatkins it’s definitely a c sound but when you say it really quickly it will sound like a z to foreigners.

MikeUniformMike · 10/07/2019 20:51

I'd say Anna Stayzha.

bionicnemonic · 10/07/2019 20:55

Surely the end is Anna Stays ye ah
as it has two vowels, 'when two vowels go walking the first does the talking'

foxtiger · 13/07/2019 19:01

anna-STAY-zee-a.

Bellsandholly · 13/07/2019 19:04

I’d say -Asia

bridgetreilly · 13/07/2019 19:29

Just to be clear, it's not originally a Russian name. It's a Greek name, meaning resurrection.
