Boy names

Due a boy later on in the year and whilst we do like some names it’s clear they’re too popular for us or will be in the next year or so. Names like Edward etc. We don’t want him to be one of 4 in a class.

So we’ve started looking at more unusual names but obviously it’s really hard to pick one that isn’t just plain stupid. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A lot of those we’ve already said no to, we were thinking more unusual - Stanley etc are all in the top 50 odd.

More along the lines of -
Felix

Names that end er are mostly out due to our last name

Be careful, because names like Felix are zeitgeisty so even if they are not in the top 50 names at the moment, the upsurge in people using them might mean your DS will be one of several that you know all born at a similar time. This has happened to various friends of mine who think they are being original and it turns out they aren't.

MotherofaCat · 09/07/2019 17:15

Tbh of you really want your son to be unique in his class call him a typically 80s name like Craig, Kevin or Steven. Names like Felix are rising in popularity whereas names populat in the 80/90s are in rapid decline.

Thanks we will have a look at 80s/90s name. Felix was a suggestion my DP came up with and although we’ve ruled it out I was just using it as an example for unusualness rather than originality.

We like a lot of names it’s just difficult as we would really like him to not be one of many.

Don't come across many young boys who go by the name of Stephen, Peter, Mark, Paul, Simon, Michael, Nicholas, Stuart, Sean, Andrew, David, John or Philip.

LKRJM · 09/07/2019 19:43

I love Peter! But my DP has vetoed it. I think it’s a nice strong name that’s not popular at all

Surely it’ll depend on where you live? For example, in the primary school my children go to there is 1 George out of nearly 400 children. No Edwards, Stanley or Wilfreds at all. Ewen or Alexander are probably the more used names here, but maybe not where you are.

LKRJM · 10/07/2019 14:30

Yes where we live all the names that are popular are Edward/George/Chester etc

All of the names rising in popularity are definitely rising here

Have a look on the ons website. You can search the top 100 names and see how many were registered in your area.
We wanted Gabriel but I was put off that it was #22 in the name lists. However there were only 4 in my borough last year so it’s very unlikely our baby will be one of many by the time he goes to school x

You're absolutely right to look at the upward trend rather than popularity according to the polls.

Felix is definitely going to come up as popular soon imo. I know two under three and I also considered it for my ds.

I love Quentin and Magnus as suggested by a pp.

I think Guy was really uncommon when we named DS about 18 months ago. It gets suggested on here a lot though so I don't know why it's rarely used.

Eighties names is a good shout too I think.

Gregory is quite nice I think, or maybe Nicholas, Jason (I know a 4yo with this name and it really suits him).

Or you could go with names from another country / culture, like Yves, Florent, Hamish, Seamus, Fergus, Ronan, Marco, Matteo etc.

LKRJM · 10/07/2019 17:57

Thanks for all the suggestions so far we’ve added a few to our list! Love Marco but know a baby Marco, Nicholas we have in the family’s I really like Amos!

Thanks very much for all your help!
