What are your favourite names that are within the top 50 (relatively common) I know MN likes the more unusual names but there are lots of lovely more common names and I feel I fit more in this camp. At the moment the two I am considering are:
Sophia
George

Isabella and Theodore
Love them both so much but would hate for my kid to be one of many in a class

AverageMummy · 09/07/2019 01:03

@Cathyheathcliff because the current fashion is to be as unique as possible that’s quite unlikely - even the 2 you mention are only 0.25% & 0.3% of babies.... statistically less than 1 in a class

Aarrkkdes · 09/07/2019 08:15

I love Isabella💕

Aria and Oscar

From the amount of Olivia's and Isabella's I know not everyone is trying to be original

I would never worry about having ’popular’ name, my DS’s name is in the top 5 yet there was only one other in his school year (total coincidence but with almost the same surname Grin).

The favourite top 50 names are, by definition, loved and currently in fashion!

The two reasons why some of us prefer to give our kids less fashionable names are

  1. there's a good chance they'll have to add their surname initial to be identified (we have 4 Oliver's in our small Scouts group!)

  2. Some fashionable names start to sound dated as they fall out of fashion. Eg Sharon, Steve, etc

Personally I hated having a popular 70s name.

Fatkins · 09/07/2019 08:57

James and Emma

ThighsRelief · 09/07/2019 08:58

Max
Sophie

lelamia · 09/07/2019 09:27

Freya and Arlo

Even if you have the most popular name there is the chance there won't even be another in the class.

My daughters friend is called Luna and there are 4 of them in the year group!

growlingbear · 09/07/2019 09:46

And you get clusters. Where we lived before there were five Bens in two streets. We moved and there were none in a year group of 100 DC.

Teen DS had a party the other night at which most of the boys appeared to be called James!

Gummibaersy · 09/07/2019 09:49

Yes, there's definitely a cluster of Olivers and Theos here. And lots of Ellies and Evies.

CockleburIck · 10/07/2019 11:30

Which list is everyone looking at? Someone above said Emma, but that was 52 on the list I saw!

From the list I saw: Rose and James

Celebelly · 10/07/2019 11:36

I have an Emma, but it's not overly common IME for children and babies now. We haven't met another at any of our baby classes. A few Ellas, though!

Ah sorry, I was looking at the top 100 names and just vaguely looking at the top half. It looked like Emma was in that half, but I may have misjudged it. It's the ONS one for 2017, but published by some other website. I'll find the link.

Ohyesiam · 10/07/2019 11:51

Dd has a version of a top 50 name and there’s only 2 others in her year group of 250.

Fatkins · 10/07/2019 11:53

Think it's 38th on that one.

CockleburIck · 10/07/2019 11:56

It’s a great, classic name, wherever it is, Fatkins. I wanted to be an Emma when I was young.

Lavenderblues · 10/07/2019 12:18

Dd has a version of a top 50 name and there’s only 2 others in her year group

But there might be more in other Year groups. We sometimes forget the cumulative effect of popular names.
