Iris, Marnie or Genevieve

Our final 3.

Love them all equally, but have tiny concerns about each. Please listen to me being neurotic and tell me which concerns are reasonable and which are ridiculous and should be ignored! Grin

Marnie
Pros:

  • my favourite name since childhood, due to appearing in one of my favourite books
  • I just think it's lovely! Vintage-y but a little bit different
  • DHs beloved grandmother's name, so it would mean a lot to him
Cons:
  • apparently there is a reality TV star with this name. Does this make it naff? Will everyone think I named my daughter after a reality TV star? Would this even matter?
  • Other concerns I've seen on naming boards are that it sounds like 'mardy' and it rhymes with 'sarnie'. (My hometown in the UK is not one where 'mardy' is common slang - I've never heard it before! And although 'sarnie' is used I can't really get that upset about it. Also DH and I live abroad where neither word has any meaning and the name works nicely in the language.

Iris
Pros:

  • the name of a family member of mine who died when she was very young. I always thought that if I had a daughter, I'd like to name her this to honour her.
  • I just think the sound of this is absolutely beautiful, and a lovely meaning too
Cons:
  • part of me thinks that naming a daughter after someone who died so young is a little morbid and I am not sure if it might just make me feel sad. Maybe it would be better as a middle name for this reason.

Genevieve
Pros:

  • I think this is gorgeous and classy when used as a full name
Cons:
  • my opinions on the nickname options vary from 'yeah that's alright' (Vivi, Eve) to 'yuck I hate it' (Jenny).

So there you have it. What do you think?

All three choices have lovely reasons behind them.
I do see your point about the use of Iris though and yes maybe it would be better for a middle.
My favourite from your list is Genevieve - it’s such a beautiful name, when used in full, like you said and when written down. I think you could control the nn by stating what you want her to be called...Eve/Evie/Vivi/Gigi and you should easily be about to avoid Jenny, people will respect it, and if you wanted to use her full name you could too just when she goes to
school it may get shortened.

imsorryiasked · 29/06/2019 07:09

Iris - lovely (regardless of or because its chosen for a deceased person)
Marnie - sounds quite hard and i don't like it.
Genevieve - very popular at the moment.

Peachbubble · 29/06/2019 07:13

I like Iris. Not keen on Marnie, and Genevieve has spelling and pronunciation issues.

Frith2013 · 29/06/2019 09:42

Iris is great.

Can’t stand Genevieve, don’t know why!

carmenbea · 29/06/2019 10:09

Marnie!

mossyroundhill · 29/06/2019 10:14

Genevieve Iris would be my suggestion.

Genevieve is a beautiful, classic name

Iris is nice as a middle name but too popular for a first name

Marnie is horrible. It sounds whiny and harsh and makes me think of Marnie from Geordie Shore as I've only heard of the name since she appeared on the show

Iliterallycantthinkofanythingq · 29/06/2019 10:37

Thanks so much for the replies everyone! Weirdly I've found myself feeling a bit disappointed when I've read people saying that their favourite is Genevieve, which maybe means that Genevieve isn't quite as equal to the other two in my mind as I thought it was! Although I do like it, I wonder if that is something I should listen to 🤔

Iliterallycantthinkofanythingq · 29/06/2019 10:44

Ooh it's Geordie Shore that the Marnie is from! I've not seen it but I've heard it's pretty awful! Going to have a quick Google and see if it puts me off x

In order, I prefer Iris, Genevieve, Marnie. But it sounds to me like you really prefer Marnie, so you should choose that. I wouldn't worry about the reality show link, especially since you're in the UK. As she grows up, no one will make the connection at all.

bridgetreilly · 29/06/2019 12:25

*not in the UK!

Iliterallycantthinkofanythingq · 29/06/2019 12:50

Bridget - I think you've hit the nail on the head about Marnie being my favourite. I genuinely didn't realise until I felt really disappointed every time someone said they didn't like it. And when I see that someone else has commented, I find myself crossing my fingers and hoping they've gone for Marnie! I adore the sound of Iris but I think it maybe would be best as a middle name as I think the death connection might be a bit much. It's not something you want to be reminded of when calling your child! Maybe a middle name could still honour her but also not be such an in-your-face reminder. Hmmmm.

Love Genevieve. Gorgeous
Marnie= Geordie Shore to me and I never even watched the show

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/06/2019 14:01

I can't stand Genevieve, and You don't seen keen on any of the potential nick names, and It doesn't seem to mean as much to you as your other choices.
Marnie and Iris are just gorgeous. However if I was naming a baby and had to choose between the 2 I'd go simply go with Marnie Iris.
I love both names equally but I think Marnie Iris flows better than Iris Marnie.

2childrenandout · 29/06/2019 14:03

Go with what you like the most. Once your baby girl has arrived you won't associate it with anything but her. I've heard of Geordie Shore, never watched it, never heard of a Marnie ever (and a teacher for nearly 20 years). You'll have read the threads on here about baby name regret, go with what you love the most. Good luck with the baby.

Iliterallycantthinkofanythingq · 29/06/2019 14:04

Where are all the people who posted on this thread : www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/3624560-Starting-to-regret-DDs-name

😂

Thank you everyone for the replies! I think this thread has really made me realise that my heart is actually set on Marnie so even though most people prefer the other two (which will still be considered for a middle name!) it's Marnie that I should probably go with! I'm normally quite an insecure/easily influenced person and so the fact that my opinion towards the name hasn't changed since reading some negative replies towards the name is quite a big deal for me and made me think this might be the name!

Thanks everyone for your comments and opinions and also for helping me realise this Smile x

Also Marnie and Iris mean the most to you and your DH. You might not have another girl to use either of the names again.

Iliterallycantthinkofanythingq · 29/06/2019 14:07

Ooh, just seen the last couple of posts! Happy to see some Marnie love! I love Marnie Iris Smile it sounds better with the surname than the other way round too which is another plus!

hexagon01 · 29/06/2019 14:10

Marnie is great, my daughter was very nearly a Marnie.

DramaAlpaca · 29/06/2019 14:45

Go with Marnie. It's so pretty & you really love it.

I think you will regret not choosing the name you love.

I'd suggest Marnie Iris for first & middle. It's lovely Smile

Watersnail · 29/06/2019 14:54

I like Marnie best and have never heard of the celeb.

Iliterallycantthinkofanythingq · 29/06/2019 14:57

Ahh thank you!! Those comments have made me really happy! 😊

OP posts:
StarbucksSmarterSister · 29/06/2019 14:58

I love Genevieve and Iris. Marnie is ok but it makes me think of the Hitchcock film. (I don't watch reality TV so had no idea there was a "celeb".

Grufallosfriends · 29/06/2019 15:00

I prefer Marnie.

Geneviève will get mispronounced a lot imo.

Iris doesn't sound so nice in English (Eye ris) as in French or German (Ee ris)

StarbucksSmarterSister · 29/06/2019 15:00

But of course you should definitely go for the one YOU like best. They're all nice in their own way.

Floopily · 29/06/2019 15:05

When I hear Marnie I think of the classic Alfred Hitchcock film, I had no idea it was the name of a z-list 'celebrity'. I like the other two but this is my favourite, I think it's far more unusual/original. I have a friend whose daughter is called Mara, which I also think is lovely.
