Phoebe is the only one I like too

cravingmilkshake · 29/06/2019 10:15

All of these names (aside from Beatrice) are our choice for our little girl due in two weeks! I think we are erring towards Matilda or phoebe!

"Waltzing Matilda" is Australia's best-known bush ballad, and has been described as the country's "unofficial national anthem". The title was Australian slang for travelling on foot (waltzing) with one's belongings in a "matilda" (swag) slung over one's back. The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker, or "swagman", making a drink of billy tea at a bush camp and capturing a jumbuck (sheep) to eat when it comes to drink from the nearby billabong (watering hole)."

Sorry OP but the sheep and the shearing are my own reality but the song takes the romance out of the name for me. Look you asked for opinions, don't get huffy.

tdam · 30/06/2019 07:08

I absolutely love Matilda. Beatrice isn't bad but I prefer Beatrix.

Fatkins · 30/06/2019 08:22

Beatrix is a bit more trendy I think. I think it will date. There are a lot of Trixie-May, Trixie-Rose type names about.

The sheep shearing thing had me very Confused too tbh. Assuming the op is in the UK, I think the people who the op's DD will meet, who instantly think of sheep, will be very few and far between. The reason I've gone off the name is because it's very commonly used in the UK now. So I seriously doubt the sheep thing will be an issue for the op's DD. Any Australian living in the UK will be well used to the name soon enough!

Love Phoebe

BlueChampagne · 02/07/2019 13:15

I thought someone was contemplating calling their baby Hamlet!

porkpiie · 03/07/2019 20:00

The 80s have called they want their names back

TatianaLarina · 03/07/2019 20:28

Beatrice or Phoebe.

elliandher5 · 03/07/2019 20:39

Very nearly named DD1 Phoebe but went for Ivy in the end. It's a gorgeous name! Not keen on Eliza / Matilda / Beatrice (but Bea is ok)

Wow. Obviously you meant to be as rude as fuck. Why?

Nonameyet1 · 03/07/2019 21:27

Eliza and Matilda are my favourites from your list.

99bb · 03/07/2019 21:29

Not sure I’d say 80s...I don’t know anyone from that decade with any of those names. Think most of them would have last been popular some time before that

TatianaLarina · 03/07/2019 21:31

Was that poster even alive in the 80s?

RubberTreePlant · 03/07/2019 21:34

You wonder. I was a child in the eighties and I can't remember ever meeting a child called Matilda, Eliza or Beatrice. Not a single one.

I did vaguely know a Phoebe. Just the one.

BarryBarryTaylor · 03/07/2019 22:43

Someone being rude (and wrong btw) as they clearly have nothing else to do. Poor you porkypie

ButterflyOfFreedom · 03/07/2019 22:45

Matilda or Eliza
