Josline?

I really love Josline pronounced Jos-leen. I swear it's a name I've heard before but in the US everyone thinks it's crazy and refuses to accept any other variation of Jocelyn. Is this a correct variation/pronunciation or am I dreaming up something that doesn't exist.

No one in the US uses Josceline either. Although I'm not 100 percent even certain of the pronunciation of that variation but I think the spelling is very beautiful.

Please help me know if these are legitimate! I feel these variations are more common in Europe. It's a hard sell in the US. This is also for a potential middle name - hypothetical right now! But this name has really been on my kind! Thank you!

www.names.org/n/josline/about

28 babies born with this name in the USA between 1880 and 2017, so extremely unusual.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 27/06/2019 04:30

Yes, in the US it's just Jocelyn or Joslin that are popular!

But I was just curious if this name was at all something anyone has heard in the UK or Europe in general? Or maybe I'm practically making up a name? 😂 I really like Jos-leen versus Jocelyn (Jos-uh-lynn). Maybe it is crazy?! I do like unique names I guess 🤷‍♀️

Also talk to me about Josceline. Is that more common in the UK?

In the US, I was told it was "a mess." But isnt Jocelyn originally a very masculine name and Josceline the more feminine form originally? And would you pronounce Josceline?

Josceline is better than Josline

AverageMummy · 27/06/2019 08:58

Not heard of it sorry

Pizzaaddict · 27/06/2019 09:05

I wouldn’t say Jocelyn is masculine I’ve only heard of it used as a woman’s name

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 27/06/2019 09:09

Jocelyn is an old feminine name. Are you thinking of Jolyon or something?

Josline looks like a brand of glass cleaner.

Or, as you say, a youneek spelling of Jocelyn.

katienana · 27/06/2019 09:10

Josline sounds a bit medical to me

CassianAndor · 27/06/2019 09:12

Sounds like a yooneek spelling and pronunciation of Jocelyn.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 27/06/2019 09:13

Never heard of Josline. I do like Jocelyn - never met one in person, so I don't think its a common name.

TillyTheTiger · 27/06/2019 09:22

The only one of those variations I've ever seen is Jocelyn. Never heard or seen Josline, Josceline or Joslin anywhere.
I think if that's the sound you want, my preferred spelling would be Joceline. If it's just a middle name it won't cause daily hassle with spelling and pronunciation anyway, so just go with whichever you like best!

SummerSeasoning · 27/06/2019 09:26

Jocelyn has been a male name.

The actor Joss Ackland is an example.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 27/06/2019 14:41

In the states, Jocelyn is a female name but if you look up the history of the name it started out as a masculine name.

Another common spelling is Jocelyne to make it feminine as well due to the fact that it was originally a boy name.

Ok well I thought maybe on this forum people would know more versions of the name. But it's the same reaction I'm getting from the forum popular for US people, which is interesting.

And stop with the yooneek name thing. It's like some people want an excuse to write that 😂 I did say I like unique names, so what I"m asking a question if any other versions of Jocelyn are popular in Europe? For some reason I thought in Europe people knew Jocelyn originated as a boy name and knew there were a lot of variations to make it feminine. But I guess I'm wrong on that!

I’ve known 3 female Jocelyns and a Josceline - all pronounced the same.

I’d say Jocelyn is unisex.

Josline (pronounced Jos leen) is very country and western.

IThrewItOnTheGround · 27/06/2019 16:26

From seeing it written down, I wouldn't realise it was meant to be a variation of Jocelyn - I would think it was pronounced "Joz-line" to rhyme with Caroline or Adaline.

LittleFairywren · 27/06/2019 16:37

What about joslene? I think most people would pronounce most variations as joss-uh-lyn.

TatianaLarina · 27/06/2019 16:39

Joslene sounds like cleaning.

LarkDescending · 27/06/2019 16:53

Jocelyn (or variants thereof) as a male name in the UK is now so rare as to be virtually extinct (see also: Evelyn, with Hilary and Aubrey also heading that way). I don't think anyone in 2019 would think they needed to tweak Jocelyn to make it feminine.

I do actually know one male Jocelyn, known as Joss, but if I heard of a baby Jocelyn I would very much expect it to be a girl.

Not keen on the Jos-LEEN pronunciation or your suggested spelling, sorry.

KnitterOfSocks · 27/06/2019 16:55

My boss was a male Jocelyn, so it is a thing

TatianaLarina · 27/06/2019 16:58

Cleaning fluid ^^

TatianaLarina · 27/06/2019 16:59

I also know a male Jocelyn. But he’s my parents generation.

SummerSeasoning · 27/06/2019 17:09

I have known a girl Jocelyn.

It works well imo.

CodenameVillanelle · 27/06/2019 19:44

No, there are no other spellings of Jocelyn in common use in the U.K..
Josceline is heinous.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 27/06/2019 20:50

Thanks everyone! I think I will just use Jocelyn. I do prefer the spelling Joslin which is popular in the states. It's a middle name too so not as worried about using the most proper version although I have decided that Josceline is just too many letters for no reason.
