I was told Zachary was a “council house name”

Hmm

I am only guessing at what they mean by a “council house name” but I assume they didn’t mean it in a kind way.

So, assuming they mean a big downmarket (apologies to council tenants, not my opinion) it isn’t anyway is it?

It probably isn’t as posh as it would have been a generation ago - I live in a very deprived area & very close to 3 schools & have heard Zack called out a lot. But it’s a lovely name whether people with less money than you like it or not.

ZacharyQuack · 26/06/2019 06:25
Sad
AuntieStella · 26/06/2019 06:47

It was used in Jilly Cooper's 'Class' as an archetypal upper middle class name.

Yes, popularity of names changes over time. Biblical names tend to stay in use in all classes.

Sessy19 · 26/06/2019 07:00

TBF, the Old Testament association is Zechariah, from the Prophet... Zachary is a modern (and Latin, so not ‘modern’ by modern standards!😁) translation, and I am familiar with the wider opinion that it’s in the ‘naughty boy’ list of names....whatever the fuck that means.

I love Zakk (it’s a European spelling, not yooneek), and I don’t care if it’s considered down-market (I don’t!) or cheap (it’s absolutely not!) I would still use it.

It’s an actual name, it would belong to an actual person. And if one in exposed to these idiots who judge a person by their name before getting to know one, then this idiots aren’t worth having in your life or your child’s!

BarryBarryTaylor · 26/06/2019 07:09

Oh god some people are idiots.
It’s just a name, and as it’s biblical you will find it used across all socio-economic groups. Elton john son is Zachary I think Hmm I also like Zeke and Zacharius/Zachariah

AnthonyCrowley · 26/06/2019 07:12

I was told the same about the name "Natasha" which I always thought was a nice, ordinary name. The actual phrase I was told was "lives in a council house, likely to be pregnant at 16".

BarryBarryTaylor · 26/06/2019 07:18

anthony I know only one Natasha and she is in her early thirties and a head researcher for Cancer treatments. Quite far from the description you were given 🤦🏻‍♀️ Really annoys me when people say a name sounds like something...it’s a load of tosh

NationMcKinley · 26/06/2019 07:19

Love the name Zachary. People are twats. Someone upthread mentioned Zacky being a “council house name” (not my words). Zaki is actually an Arabic name........

ceebeejeebies · 26/06/2019 07:24

I live on an estate and I've only recently come across a Zachary at dds nursery, his family seem quite middle class to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

averythinline · 26/06/2019 07:29

there seem to be a lot of them so maybe thats what they mean...
there are 2 in DS year (2 form school) and are probably at least 2/3 in most other years..
although they may be a mix of Zachary/ Zakk/Zaki - the kids always end up being called Zak....

funmummy48 · 26/06/2019 07:32

There are a lot of Zach/Zak/Zac's around here and lots & lots of Reubens.

Purplehammer · 26/06/2019 07:46

It’s a Dingle name.

CassianAndor · 26/06/2019 07:52

The two Zacs I know are as middle class as you like, so no it isn't.

carmenbea · 26/06/2019 08:35

Love Zachary- wouldn't ever describe it as that either!

sue51 · 26/06/2019 08:40

A good old fashioned name. I think it's classless.

AverageMummy · 26/06/2019 09:50

I never really know what people mean by classic here. To me classic is a name that isn’t as prone to suddenly being in & out of fashion - which definitely wouldn’t be Zachary which is very much a fashion surge. But maybe people mean classic to mean, long term staple name. Always confuses me!

I was told Zachary was a “council house name”
AverageMummy · 26/06/2019 09:54

Asked my husband teacher if he’d taught many Zacharys & what sort of background they had. He said lots (he’s taught in 20 odd schools).

“Mixed bag....lots of Asian Zacharys / Zacks & all sorts of backgrounds really. Don’t remember any particularly posh ones - but no real association with the name.”

Being secondary kids that would be over a decade out of date of course. There are a lot in the primary schools round here & it’s a very deprived area.

But I can’t see why it should be a problem - it’s a lovely name - one of my favourites actually.

CassianAndor · 26/06/2019 09:54

agreed! It isn't a classic name in my book either as it's only recently come into fashion. No Zacs around when I were a lass!

Just because something first appeared in a book 2000+ years ago doesn't make it classic.

StealthPolarBear · 26/06/2019 09:56

People who say stuff like that are showing themselves up and can be freely ignored imo

Chooseyourweapon · 26/06/2019 10:18

Zachary (not sure of spelling) is a “bad lad” name where we are. I surprised people don’t think it is! Zachary is the lad who robs cars are drinks cans in the daytime!

Watersnail · 26/06/2019 10:18

What was the name of the person who said that? Tell them that (their name) denotes a small-minded snob.

dottiedodah · 26/06/2019 10:29

It is a lovely name IMHO.Our friend who is a Doctor called one of her children by this name .! What a silly thing for someone to say .Does living in a Council house make you some sort of untouchable!FGS .My sons friend who was very polite ,and well mannered came from a CH and his whole family were very pleasant as well!.Im sure that about 95% of CH tenants are similar ,but we only get to hear about the shocking types dont we?!

BarryBarryTaylor · 26/06/2019 10:33

It’s awful that council estate has such terrible connotations. I live in London, surrounded by council estates, children’s names range from Esme to Esmail and front Mabel to Charlie. They are just names 🤷🏻‍♀️ I really don’t get it

Bookworm4 · 26/06/2019 10:35

I know someone that named their child Zacky. confused THAT is a council house name
Really? Are people this snobbish? You do know not everyone in a council house is on benefits, has a criminal record and 7 kids 🙄

BarryBarryTaylor · 26/06/2019 10:38

I look after a gorgeous Zacky, parents are Turkish, own a chain of organic coffee shops and a far from what you are trying to imply, and even if they were, who cares! Get a grip!
