James as a girls name?

Hi all,

I met a little girl called James the other day, at first I thought it was weird but now I’ve got to know her it’s really cute and suits her. I’ve heard of a few other girls names James and I was wondering what everyone thought of it as a girls name?

Why? I teach a “Dylan, but she is a girl”. Your dd would forever be known as “James the girl” and, at my school, be ridiculed for it, too.

UnderPompeii · 22/06/2019 17:04

What now? That's like having Alice as a boys name.

DonkeyHohtay · 22/06/2019 17:05

Don't be ridiculous. James is a boys' name.

Would you call a boy Rebecca, Lucy or Susan? No? So don't call a girl James.

CaitlinEJ · 22/06/2019 17:09

Just clarifying, I’m never going to use it as a girls name.

We have "boy Ali and girl Ally" in the same class at my children's school. "Boy James and girl James" would be somewhat bizarre, but that is, I suspect, what would end up happening

CarolDanvers · 22/06/2019 17:13

I think they use it as a girls name more often in the U.S. I quite like it. Wouldn't use it though.

userabcname · 22/06/2019 17:15

I think a celebrity has a girl James? Jaime is a girl's name and it's not a million miles away so I don't see a problem really.

Walkamileinmyshoesbeforeujudge · 22/06/2019 17:16

School friend was Kelly. A boy. Years of being on the girl's list and ridiculed.
Jamie maybe but not James.

CarolDanvers · 22/06/2019 17:19

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have a dd called James. As does Kristin Cavallari.

formerbabe · 22/06/2019 17:20

James is a great name for a boy.

It seems terribly 'try hard' and hipster to call a girl James.

dementedma · 22/06/2019 17:21

Male and female Lindsay/Lindsey is quite common here in Scotland, but James for a girl sounds odd. How about Dave?

origamiunicorn · 22/06/2019 17:21

It's very similar to Jaime and I like it 👍

Topseyt · 22/06/2019 17:21

It's not a girl's name. Not to me.

Cute, lovely, traditional and strong on a boy. Idiotic on a girl. She would constantly be being put on the wrong lists and having to explain herself.

WeShouldBeFriends · 22/06/2019 17:22

I like it Smile

DramaAlpaca · 22/06/2019 17:24

It's a strong, classic, well known, established, traditional male name. It's ridiculous on a girl.

Mrsjayy · 22/06/2019 17:54

There is a celeb with a dd called james I think it is silly because it is a boys name Jamie for a girl is no better imo

Mrsjayy · 22/06/2019 17:57

It is bloody bloody Ryan reynolds and Blake livelys Dd I just tuted so loud at that I love them both

daphine2004 · 22/06/2019 17:59

I like James and also Michael as names for girls - there is a character my partner feels is a strong female in Star Trek (new one) called Michael. I don’t like either of those names for a boy though.

PencilFace · 22/06/2019 18:01

Ridiculous name for a girl. There are so many nice girl's names I just don't see the point.

Whoops75 · 22/06/2019 18:03

This^

Never liked the name James Hmm

Mrsjayy · 22/06/2019 18:07

Double bloody in my post clearly i am that angry Grin

TheRattleBag · 22/06/2019 18:08

Irrelevant fact - the actress who played the mum in The Waltons is called Michael Learned Smile

Mrsjayy · 22/06/2019 18:12

Aww yes she was I wanted my mun to be Olivia Walton

NeverSayFreelance · 22/06/2019 18:33

@UnderPompeii you mean like Alice Cooper? Hmm

Jaime is a girls name. Tbh I don't see the issue with making a name unisex but I do agree that being known as "James, but she's a girl" would be exhausting for any child.

GeriTe · 22/06/2019 18:34

Kristin Cavallari doesn't have a daughter called James ..
