Number 1 baby name or something family and friends all hate 😣

We found naming our son so easy and he was Imran ( well .... Immy) from me being 3 months pregnant!!!

Having a 'mare finding a name for our little girl we're expecting though!!!

We really like Sophia but hate that it's number 1 in the UK. Just can't get past it and don't want her to be 1 of 3 Sophia's in her class...

We also like

Yara
Nura
Farida
Zia

But all our family and friends obviously hate them. I wouldn't care if they were just indifferent but I'm starting to question if we just have bad taste in names lol. Don't want to saddle our little one with a bad name!

Any thoughts v welcome 😊

I don't understand why people dont want popular names. They are popular for a reason. My name was very common clearly around the time I was born and lots of us with the same name when at school and now work and it doesn't bother me one bit!!!

sawyersfishbiscuits · 22/06/2019 12:09

I can understand where you're coming from. Sophia is such a pretty name. Only one in our school.

Can I add 'Nola' to the mix. I really like it and it sort of seems similar to your other choices.

QuimReaper · 22/06/2019 12:13

Walk I was going to say the same, but GoT will probably be a thing of the past by the time hypothetical Yara is even at school. Good point though, OP should be prepared for a lifetime of people of our generation saying to Yara "ah, you're a 2019 baby - that'll be after Game of Thrones then!"

Zia seems like a great compromise, similar sound to Sophia. I love the Saffiah suggestion too, I vastly prefer it to Sophia!

I'm not keen on Nura - are you pronouncing it Nyuh-ra, or Nuuuh-ruh? (If that makes sense!)

Cordyline1 · 22/06/2019 13:01

Farida and Zia are lovely. So is Sophia

MmeBufo · 22/06/2019 13:05

Yara is great and I rather like Nura too. love the suggestion of Amara as well.

Sophia is lovely as a middle name

raeray · 22/06/2019 13:10

Nura is beautiful that's be my pick.
Reminds me of a brave and brilliant girl I once knew.

BlueMerchant · 22/06/2019 13:13

Could you change Yara into Zara?
I love Sophia

Howtotrainyourhamster · 22/06/2019 17:30

I like Yara and Nura but prefer it spelled Noora.
Sophia is ok but a bit less interesting.

Flicketyboo · 22/06/2019 17:42

I'll never get why people discuss their name ideas with other people..it's a sure fire way to make your decision 1000x harder!

wherethefucksyourmanners · 22/06/2019 18:46

Call your baby EXACTLY what you want to !! Both my children have what were considered bizarre names 16 and 13 years ago and we were ridiculed by family , now everyone loves that they have different names ( especially them ) and the protesters all say that the names suit their personalities. Your baby , your choice !! Don't pay any attention Thanks

MikeUniformMike · 22/06/2019 18:54

Zia is the one that stands out for me. Much more individual than the perfectly nice but overpopular Sophia.

SassyBadger · 22/06/2019 19:00

It might turn out that your daughter meets very few Sophias on her journeys through playgroup and school. I really do like Zia though.

Please try and leave friends and family's opinions aside. Once your daughter is here they'll forget they ever made a sniffy noise about her name Grin

What about Rayah or Amal?

motherofcats81 · 22/06/2019 19:03

I'm pregnant now and if it's a girl it will be Sophia (probably Sofia actually) - it annoys me somewhat that it's so popular but it's been my chosen daughter's name since about 1999 so I do not care!

My boy's name choices are also popular - lovely names often will be! And names go in and out of favour so much it's impossible to predict I think - you could pick something unusual and find it in the top 10 next year. Go with what you like I think.

Perditavita · 22/06/2019 19:29

I love Yara and Farida. Zia is nice too!

FartnissEverbeans · 22/06/2019 19:30

Zia is awesome! I love Yara too. I like all of them tbh

MrsBertBibby · 23/06/2019 00:35

They are all 4 lovely names but Nura is really gorgeous. That's a name with real power.

Switsy · 23/06/2019 01:05

Nura Fen.

I prefer Zia.

WhatALearningCurve · 23/06/2019 03:33

I have a 15 week old boy. From before we knew we were having a boy we had the name picked. My entire family hated it. They've very slowly accepted it and now I don't think they could imagine him being called anything else. If you love the name - go for it. They will accept it and grow to love it.

The only thing I've really learnt from the whole thing is next time I won't tell them a name until the baby is here!

Cookit · 23/06/2019 06:52

Yes Sophia is not number 1. It’s number 11.

Number 1 is Olivia and number 2 is Amelia.

I adore Yara. One of my favourite Evers.

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 23/06/2019 19:23

I know a young Hamna which I think is lovely. She’s about 4.

ThinkWittyThoughts · 23/06/2019 19:54

I like all those names but think Zia is my favourite

cindersrella · 23/06/2019 19:57

I love Yara

Lucindaloveday · 23/06/2019 20:33
