Any thoughts on Bede. As in, the Venerable Bede, early medieval saint, monk and historian from the NE

Does it sound too, like, Beady?

Love it. Love history so think it’s a fab name.

daisypond · 16/06/2019 16:43

I quite like it - ancient name and such a famous and influential person. But “bead” sort of puts me off.

RamonaQ · 16/06/2019 16:45

I used to know a John-Bede, and he was a gorgeous smart little soul!

BarryBarryTaylor · 16/06/2019 16:47

I too made the bidet association.
Even though I know the pronunciation is different, i think it’s an ugly looking (and sounding) name. I’m so very sorry OP

FogCutter · 16/06/2019 16:55

I'd think it was odd to name your child after a small plastic thing! And he'd forever correcting the spelling of it.

Trinnidad · 16/06/2019 18:52

Big fan of the Venerable Bede! Great name too. I know someone who used it as a middle name.

Tillygetsit · 16/06/2019 22:47

I'm in the too beady camp.

mathanxiety · 19/06/2019 03:17

I love it, but I think how well it would go down would depend on what circles you travel in.

Jemima232 · 19/06/2019 03:23

I s'pose it's better than Balonz.

Marginally.

dreichuplands · 19/06/2019 03:29

I suggested this, DH vetoed straight away.

manicinsomniac · 19/06/2019 08:22

I like it but I don't think it's possible to hear it without adding The Venerable - and that's quite a weight of expectation for a child.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 19/06/2019 11:43

Makes me think of the town St Bede's.

It's a bit weird. Not keen (sorry).

Bluntness100 · 19/06/2019 11:46

I also mentally read bidet. I don't think this is a great idea as your child will have a life time of being called bidet. And no one wants that.

PCohle · 19/06/2019 11:58

Total pain in the arse to have to explain how it's pronounced over and over again.

Diamond88 · 19/06/2019 16:32

Awful. Proof you should never ask for advice on forums..... If I posted 'button' as a name you can guarantee loads of posts would 'love it' .

FizzyGreenWater · 19/06/2019 17:27

No, it only sounds 'cool' and interesting because Venerable Bede, really old name etc. But take it on its own and it's a bit rubbish. No shortening. Half the people hearing it on introduction will think he's called Bead. Written down you think of bidet. It's very abrupt and doesn't flow very well into any second name really.

Taytotots · 20/06/2019 01:24

My grandad was a Bede (Irish catholic family). He used to call himself the not-so-venerable Bede. So hard for me to be objective about it.

Fifthtimelucky · 20/06/2019 08:25

Makes me think of the Venerable, and Adam.

There are a number of St Bede's schools and colleges and there is a Durham university college named (half) after him.

It wouldn't be my choice though.

GoldenBee · 22/06/2019 20:40

My instant thought was bidet those bum washing basins
