opinions on Ottilie? I have a feeling it’s a bit of a marmite name. I thought it was a nice balance of unusual and classic.

Also trying to think of middle names to go with it. So far the front runner is Ottilie Fleur...any suggestions welcome!

I don't understand the sudden love for Ottilie in the UK. German old lady chic has completely swerved it, although you'd have thought it'd be really popular. I think it's having a moment and will date.

I adore Ottilie! A little girl in a baby class I was in the other day was called Ottie and she was the sweetest.

I also really like Odette if you hadn't considered it

Gorgeous name but needs a single syllable second name.

It does sound like "otter" to me, but I just mentioned it to my SIL and she said she really liked it!

welshweasel · 16/06/2019 17:36

Love it. But prefer spelt Otilie.

I think it goes well with a single syllable middle name.

It’s definitely having a moment. It makes me think of otters too.

That's absolute rubbish. Ottillie is pronounced Ohtillia. Not otterleyConfused

m0therofdragons · 17/06/2019 20:23

Love that combination. Go for it!

Scottishgirl85 · 17/06/2019 20:33

It's a name that in theory I should love but I just can't. I can't imagine talking to a colleague called Ottilie, seems like beyond the age of 10 it doesn't work. Maybe my accent doesn't do it any favours either. Sorry!

Astronica · 18/06/2019 03:56

Sorry, just otter and utterly to me.

ZebraKid71 · 18/06/2019 11:51

I'm not a fan. I know two, one pronounces it Otter-ly, the other oh-tayl-ya. Same spelling.

They are Ottilie Clare and Ottilie Alexandra.

Flobeee · 18/06/2019 15:04

@harebel I beg to differ. I’ve only ever heard it as Ott-illy, but of course there will be different pronunciations so I’m not disputing Ohtillia is a valid pronunciation too.

I agree with everyone on the single syllable middle name. Some good ones to think on. Knew it wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste but then again, is any name universally liked? Grin

Definitely not on mumsnet Flo Grin

The one I know it Ottilie Alice (pronounced Ott-illy) and Ottie is a very cute nn. Lovely name.

Rubyisabellazoquj · 05/02/2021 00:06

I actually pronounce it ott-er-lee

Rubyisabellazoquj · 05/02/2021 00:09

Otters are so cute so not really a problem for me haha I also pronounce it more ott-i-lee
More than otter-lee if you know what I mean Smile

The problem with Ottilie is that it isn't supposed to be pronounced 'Otterly'. It is a mispronunciation of a German name which has become popular. 'Ottilie' is pronounced more like 'O-tee-lyuh'... Sort of. It's hard to write. So really it's very odd. It's basically a mistake that someone made and then caught on and it now suddenly booming in popularity... I know 2 babies with this name and I know OF at least 3 more.

I think the name is pretty but I fjnd it a bit embarrassing to take a name from another country and mis-pronounce it. I liked Genevieve for my daughter (with the Englisj pronunciation) but have french friends and was too embarrassed to basically totally mis-pronounce the French name!

I think Ottilie will get more and more popular ovet the next few years and then suddenly seem really dated.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 05/02/2021 05:30

Me again! Been thinkunt about it and realised that as i'm an expat I suppose this sort of issue is more of an problem for me than it would be for someone who isn't frequently around people from other countries. So if you're going to spend most of your time in thd UK and not around people from whatever country it is that the name you like is from, in this case Germany, then I supoose it doesn't matter much. It's obvious from this thread thay most people in the UK don't know it's a mispronunciation and assume the 'otterly' pronunciation is correct... So maybe it wont be a problem within the UK. Like I said, the UK sound is pretty, so maybe ignore my last post! If I were to use it and pronounce it like 'otterly' i'd pair it with 'Faith'.
