My children all have double barrelled surnames. But me and father are no longer together and he has had no contact for 4 years. My question is legally do i need to use both surnames or can we just drop his on certain documents this is the childrens decision as they dont associate themselfs with him anymore. The school has been very helpful and will only use my surname for the children after i explained how upset there where having both. Only one is old enough to change her name by deed poll which is plans to do. Im sure i got told i could pick which names they use but will this be allowed on passports

Found this on guidance online:

^Where an applicant has removed/added a hyphen in cases of double barrelled surname, this can be accepted without documentary evidence providing the spelling and the order of the names remains the same^

This suggests you can at least drop the hyphen meaning from the passport which would be a small step

No I don’t think you can - this is copied:

I will be getting deed poll for 2 but the one child who really wants her name dropped i cant as dad has parental rights and i know even if i went out my way to find him he wouldn't agree and i dont want the drama. Im going to try but wouldnt want her to fill left out

Not without his agreement if he has parental rights. I've watched this battle a couple of times as a teacher.

You need to get his permission to change a name by deed poll for the child. If you don't he could take the matter to court and ask for an order forcing you to change it back. I've seen this happen and judges don't take kindly to unilateral changes of name so I would recommend getting in touch with him first.
