My list of names for boys was heavily inspired by JC. Now I know I’m having a girl and I’m struggling with the list so please hit me with your JC female characters for inspiration.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 12/06/2019 09:37

Thanks all. Many of these were already on my list so teenage summer holidays reading Jilly Cooper must have had influence than I though. DH and I are still not in agreement.

I did actually name one of my children out of a JC book. And had plans for another name from the same source for the opposite sex.
Are your DH's objections because of the source?
My DC's father had/has no idea that's why I thought of it and would have been appalled in an "anti-chicklit" way if he knew. He loved both names though.
You may be a much nicer and more honest person than I though (not difficult Smile).
And your DH less judgemental (ditto).

Watersnail · 12/06/2019 11:06

What does your DH object to? Would he prefer any of the more modern sloaney names?

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 12/06/2019 11:14

LaMarschallin I haven’t told him the source!

We generally don’t agree on names. He does prefer more traditional names eg Catherine but thinks because our other DD has a short name this one should too. He doesn’t want to call the baby a shorten version of name either so he won’t want Katie.

Trying to find girls names we both like is a minefield and it is why our other DD was nameless for a while.

He also thinks Fenella would be shorten to Fanny.

Ah. I never thought of that. I'd have guessed "Fen" (for obvious JC reasons) or "Ella". Which I like.

The shortening thing is tricky. DC's father had similar worries and we chose names that are difficult to shorten/alter, but not impossible. How does he feel about lengthening?
Jane to Janey, to give a JC example. Or, indeed, Jill to Jilly.
I read somewhere that she (JC) said that, while "Jilly and Leo" sounded fine, "Jill and Leonard" sounded like a couple out of 1970s Come Dancing. She did not seem to think the latter was a Good Thing.

My JC named child is often given a nickname based on their initials. Much like RCB for Rupert. Hard to legislate against these things.

Hope you let us know your decision 🙂

TatianaLarina · 12/06/2019 17:55

The Fenella I know is Nella or Fen. Never heard her called Fanny.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 12/06/2019 17:58

Saffy- but you could name her Saffron
