DS having same name as his Daddy?

We haven't found out what we are having yet, but if we are having a boy, I'd love him to have the same name as his Daddy!

What are people's experiences of the logistics of having father and son with the same name?

DPs name can't be shortened as it only has one syllable, so just wondering how the two could be distinguished if I were telling a story about them etc.

Thanks!

We have our Baby's names chosen ready for when we conceive. Partners name will be Baby's middle name if it's a Boy

I agree with the majority view on here. I think the confusion re post etc would be annoying but not entirely insurmountable. But I think the lack of a sense of an identity of my very own would be horrid for me. I would hate to be named after a parent. Paradoxically, I’d also hate if my sibling was named after a parent - it seems like saying this one child (usually the eldest) is so special in their father’s eyes (or v occasionally the mother’s), that they get the very same name. It implies subsequent children are less special somehow.

Totally agree on Trump as an example of the kind of person I’d imagine does this! I can’t believe I’m saying this though but in fairness to him, his eldest daughter is also named after her mother which is either equal opportunities or double the ego - you decide (Ivanka’s real name is Ivana just like her mother, the -ka ending is an affectionate nickname).

If you are in the U.K. there’s a big risk he’ll get called “Little X”, - which is shit. I went out with “Little Roy” his dad was “Big Roy”.

There is also the fashion for names.

Some like say Derek haven’t made a comeback and sound ‘old’
Or there could be an association with some mad-man (Adolf anyone?) What happens then?
Others like Cody are more American imports but sound fresher and younger.

Names have to stand the test of time.

No, no, no

My sister and I have a diminutive versions of our relatives names and thats bad enough. I am named after my nan and she has been dead 15 years yet my family still get muddled sometimes and call me her name (i.e the full version).

I wouldn't do it.. Use a similar name or use for the middle name

My dB has the same name as my df. Well, it’s the English version of dfs name. Very bloody confusing with the post and phone calls. I wouldn’t.

I really loathe it when people do this, I find it egotistical at best. It’s such a strange thing to do. Your child isn’t an extension of you, they deserve their own identity.

Dad names are more often than not cringey and embarrassing for children. All names apart from very, very, few names come in cycles. People always think wtf did you call your child x then it becomes apparent when dads name is mentioned.
