@maimainomai hint: it doesn't make sense. Just a way for one group of people to try andmake others feel bad.
Calling your child Leogh is common. Calling your daughter Persephone is try-hard or pretentious. As if being working class means you can't be down with Greek mythology.
Anyone with any sense knows it's utter rubbish.

sunnyshines · 10/06/2019 08:44

The self-limiting British notion of 'knowing your station' is ridiculous. Of course there is no name 'too good' for you or your child.

I agree. Utterly ridiculous. Why shouldn't we all try hard to find great names for our kids? Why shouldn't anyone be allowed to be interested in Greek mythology?

sunnyshines · 10/06/2019 08:45

Sorry, that was attempting to diplomatically say that my first reaction was that they sounded a bit pretentious.

Pretentious? Pretending to be what exactly?Hmm

SleepingStandingUp · 10/06/2019 08:53

Better than one ought to be 😂

sunnyshines · 10/06/2019 09:49

poncy which is basically slang insult for something being a "bit gay" as in homosexual.

This thread is actually hilarious. Names that are gay GrinHmmGrin

Time40 · 10/06/2019 11:21

Oooooh, I LOVE Severin and Severina. Goodness, you couldn't get much more unusual than that, but also very beautiful. Do it! Helena is lovely, too. I don't like Alma - it sounds ugly to me.

Not Boris. Not Boris! Anything but Boris!

Lavenderblues · 10/06/2019 13:59

Caspar sounds like the boy that starved because he didn't eat soup tbh...(Idk if you have that in the UK. My grandmother liked to read it to me

Suppenkaspar! I too remember him.

Lavenderblues · 10/06/2019 14:00

I'm a Gemma so very biased. although people saying its awful so i'm holing back the tears here.

I always loved the name Jennifer for a girl so beautiful.

KittenMittens1 · 10/06/2019 15:38

@KittenMittens1

I'm sorry, I should have considered how honest opinions might make other people feel (before starting this thread).

Gemma is actually one of my current favourites. It's an extremely lovely name imo.

Yes. Suppenkasper. But the Daumenlutscher (thumb sicker) that has his thumbs cut off by giant scissors was the worst! (well, I also disliked the one with the girls that burns do death and Hans Guck-In-Die-Luft. And Zappelphilipp. OK. I hate the whole book.)

Awww, Gemma. There's nothing wrong with it. It's a lovely name Flowers

mathanxiety · 11/06/2019 04:23

@maimainomai many thanks for the link to Struwwelpeter Grin

I remember it so well from my childhood.
I still have a clear memory of a picture I drew of a burning house and a pair of little red shoes and two crying cats.

KittenMittens1 · 11/06/2019 08:54

@maimainomai aww bless i was only joking haha!

tbf if I could name myself I wouldn't choose my name haha.

maimainomai · 12/06/2019 06:16

tbf if I could name myself I wouldn't choose my name haha.

Why? Is there a specific reason? How does it feel to be a Gemma (in your opinion)?

OP posts:
KittenMittens1 · 12/06/2019 09:50

meh, there were 4 of us throughout my school year growing up 2 Gemma's & 2 Jemma's.

tbf I grew up knowing my mum didn't intend on calling me Gemma as she was put into a coma when I was born and my dad registered me as Gemma accidentally instead of Emma (what my mother wanted). So my name has always been the joke of the family haha.

I'm not sure why I just think its not a feminine name but i'll give credit to its a sensible name.

starkid · 12/06/2019 14:42

Hi, here's my favourites :)

Katharina
Helena
Elena

Sebastian
Louis
Dimitri

maimainomai · 13/06/2019 16:59

@KittenMittens1

Thank your for the explanation. That must have been very difficult (and does explain why you wouldn’t choose that name for yourself.)

It’s a very soft and feminine name imo (btw).

The British ‘th’ sound is a big consideration for me too! None of my family can do it, and I don’t do it all the time either.

From your lists I like:
Gemma
Katherina
Elena
Helena
Sebastian
Erik
Dimitri
Louis
Max (if it’s short for something)

Other European names I like are

Astrid
Elisa
Margot
Caterina

Rafael/Rafaele
Nicholas
Alessandro
Frederick

Don’t worry about ‘poshness’. DS has a stereotypically ‘posh’ name but combined with his surname it just sounds very European, so I don’t think he’ll have people getting preconceived notions about his ‘poshness’ when he’s older.

benevolentassassin · 13/06/2019 22:26

I only like Dana and Louis from your list - they are lovely names. A lot of the others are quite ‘fussy’.
