Tyronne

I met a bloke in his late 30s today who's called Tyronne. He even spelled it for me. He pronounced it TIE ron. If I'd just seen it written down I'd have thought a female name but nope, a stubbly-chinned guy with a beanie and tattoos.

It’s quite a common African/Caribbean name.

Not heard it pronounced Tie Ron before - usually it’s Tie Rhone.

Moominfan · 05/06/2019 20:29

I second the black/Caribbean name. Really popular 90s/00s

StrippingTheVelvet · 05/06/2019 20:45

Name of a Northern Irish county when there's only one n.

Divgirl2 · 05/06/2019 21:01

There is a Tyrone in Coronation Street so I wouldn't say it's particularly unheard of as a name?

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 05/06/2019 21:41

I know four. Definitely not unusual, rather boring.

NameChangedNoImagination · 06/06/2019 13:09

No African I've ever known is called Tyrone or anything similar. They'd be black British usually from a Caribbean background.

milly2000 · 06/06/2019 15:07

My older brother is called Tyrone and he's white British. Only one I've ever meet.

bridgetreilly · 06/06/2019 19:09

Tyrone is relatively common, but I've never seen/heard Tyronne. I don't love either, tbh.

ReganSomerset · 06/06/2019 19:11

I wouldn't bat an eyelid tbh. Do you live in a very monocultural place?

RosaWaiting · 06/06/2019 19:11

only ever known men with this name.

SherlockSays · 06/06/2019 19:14

Tyrone is a completely different name to what the OP is talking about.. Hmm

Tyrone - common in Irish naming (my cousin is called Tyrone, his dad is Irish)
Tyronne - would assume descends from African or Caribbean American cultures

TroysMammy · 06/06/2019 19:18

I know one, white British late 60's/early 70's. Probably named after the film star Tyrone Power.

Quintella · 06/06/2019 19:54

Tyrone as an Irish county and Tyrone as a first name are obviously well known but Tyronne pronounced tie-ron is certainly a new one on me! I'm sure he's had a lifetime of 'no, actually it's double NN and it's pronounced...'.I'd have no patience for that.

Moominfan · 06/06/2019 22:29

Seriously nobodies heard Tyrone's on the phone?

villainousbroodmare · 07/06/2019 05:44

Quintella I think some of the responses above show how this poor guy ended up with the name he's got... A lot of people don't notice there's a difference between the well-established male name Tyrone (Ty RONE) and the feminine-looking unintuitively pronounced version he has.

I dont understand what's feminine about Tyronne?

MyOtherProfile · 07/06/2019 06:25

I dont understand what's feminine about Tyronne?

In lots of places ending in nne would make a word / name feminine eg Adrien / Adrienne, Brian / Brianne, Christian / Christianne. It's a commonly used thing and may come from the French or other languages.

DameSquashalot · 07/06/2019 06:31

It looks female to me too OP.

Everybody OP is talking about TYRONNE - not Tyrone.

SherlockSays · 07/06/2019 06:41

There's a couple of famous Tyronne's - it's not at all an uncommon name.. just probably not that common in the UK.

Tyronne Ebuehi - footballer for Nigeria
Tyronne del Pino - another footballer, Spanish

TatianaLarina · 07/06/2019 08:27

Tyronne is not a French name though. In France it’s Tyron - which is a version of the Irish name.

And an nne ending isn’t always female - Etienne for example.

MyOtherProfile · 07/06/2019 08:59

@TatianaLarina of course you're right. I was just responding to the pp who asked what's feminine about Tyronne by pointing out why to lots of people a word ending in nne would look feminine.
