Hello! Does the name Margot Cook sound too clunky? I’m worried it does, though I like Margot a lot.

I think it sounds fine. Nice name too.

lavenderblues · 05/06/2019 14:27

Pronounced the French way, Mar-goh, works well with Cook.

Pronounced Mar-gott (German, Scandinavian etc) doesn't work that well with Cook imo.

TatianaLarina · 05/06/2019 14:28

It’s ok.

Something with 3 syllables like Amelia would work better.

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 05/06/2019 15:25

Sounds amazing!

Whoops wrong thread, have reported...

Thanks for your opinions so far! Definitely pronounced like ‘Margo’ and not with a hard t 🙂

I have a Margot but we have a two syllable surname... with a one syllable surname I would probably have opted for a 3 syllable first name (Alexandra, Georgina etc). But if you love the name go for it Smile

daisypond · 05/06/2019 16:53

It’s fine and I do like Margot a lot but with the surname it seems a bit abrupt somehow. But I wouldn’t overthink it if you like Margot.

KinderSurpriseBump · 05/06/2019 18:15

Maybe with a middle name would flow better. Like: Margot Elizabeth Cook.

lavenderblues · 05/06/2019 18:20

But you never use your middle name....

ThePhoenixRises · 05/06/2019 18:38

I don't like it, too many o's

Malyshek · 05/06/2019 19:07

Margot Cook sounds fine to me.

You can also spell it Margaut, Margault or Margaux.

MikeUniformMike · 05/06/2019 19:10

or Margo...

TatianaLarina · 05/06/2019 20:02

I agree abrupt is the right word.

I think the problem is the g followed by 2 c sounds. It’s a bit consonant heavy.

tiramisu1 · 05/06/2019 20:32

How about Margherita or Margaret?

TatianaLarina · 05/06/2019 20:36

Margaret Cook sounds like she’d be a friend of my mum’s.

Magdalena?

hexagon01 · 06/06/2019 08:01

Thanks everyone. We do have a shortlist of other names (I don’t seem to like 3 syllable names so all 2, but they do flow better I think). I had discounted Margot from the list weeks ago because for this reason but I can’t get it out of my head. I suppose it might have to just stay there. Never mind! Though very mixed reaction so let’s see how my hormones are when I actually give birth!

It sounds a bit clunky to me, but I wouldn't think twice about it if I met a Margot Cook. We all meet people whose names we wouldn't necessarily have chosen ourselves, just because people's tastes vary. Use it if YOU are happy with how it sounds. Martha Cook would be nice IMO.

Thanksithaspockets · 06/06/2019 20:06

It think it works nicely. In poetic terms it forms a cretic (dum-di-dum).

ilikepurple · 06/06/2019 20:09

Ma go cook wouldn't work where I live as we call mum Ma so it sounds like we are asking her to go and cook.

I know a Woody Cook....would he cook, no his wife does....you get my drift?

TatianaLarina · 06/06/2019 20:09

So would Rosa Cook - but that sounds a lot better.

TatianaLarina · 06/06/2019 20:10

That was to pockets ^^

ThanksItHasPockets · 07/06/2019 06:38

It’s probably the series of velar sounds (g and two k) that make it feel clunky to many, which would rule out any forename with a velar consonant (g, k, ng) in the final syllable.

I know Rosa was just to illustrate a point but that is a really lovely name.

hexagon01 · 07/06/2019 07:31

Interesting linguistic discussion! Martha is a name that is already on our shortlist, and Rosa is absolutely beautiful but has recently been used by a very good friend so I wouldn’t feel comfortable using it. I’m not 100% turned off Margot but I suspect she may end up a Martha or Marnie (apparently I just love Mar names!).

OP posts:
Norwayswedeniceland · 07/06/2019 11:36

I adore Martha
I really don’t like Marnie. The only Marnie I’ve ever know of is that girl off Geordie Shore...would be enough to put anyone off
