Maxine, Josephine or Roxanne?

I really want a name outside of the top 100 and I love all 3 of these names. What vibe does each name give off and which is your favourite? Just thought I'd say in advance that the Maxine Carr association does not particularly bother me; nor does the Sting association with Roxanne.

Josephine (Josie) I think is lovely.

tiramisu1 · 05/06/2019 07:47

I also like Josephine

EleanorReally · 05/06/2019 07:51

I thought of Roxanne, the American TV series
Maxine, unusual for this age
Josephine - lovely

Malyshek · 05/06/2019 08:02

When I hear Josephine I always think either of the empress, or the dragon age character...

I really like Roxanne and, to a lesser extent, Maxine

RaffertyFair · 05/06/2019 08:04

Josephine is a very different name to the other 2 imo. Classic (been plenty of Josephines in history).

Maxine and Roxanne feel like 80s names with a soap opera feel to me.

swimmerforlife · 05/06/2019 08:36

When I was kid I really wanted to be called Roxy after the surf brand! So I vote Roxy and get rid of Roxanne.

Maxine is awful.

Josephine is alright but I don't like Josie.

SamStephens · 05/06/2019 08:41

I like Josephine. But I’m bias as I have a Josephine and she goes by Jojo or Josie and it just totally suits her. Funnily enough it wasn’t a name I picked but once my husband knew we were having a girl he just latched onto it and didn’t let go so I went with his determination. It’s a gorgeous name and we’ve yet to meet another one her age (yet).

frenchonion · 05/06/2019 08:58

Maxine Carr. Can't get past that association! Josephine is nice though, nn Josie. Nice name. Not keen on Roxanne personally but it's not a bad name. Roxy is a cool nn.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 05/06/2019 09:12

Roxanne

Chocmallows · 05/06/2019 12:51

I'm not keen on Roxanne (Roxy) or Maxine (Max), both sound hard names. If you do pick Roxanne I think you should put Roxanne on the BC as it more easily gives your DD the option for Anne which is a softer name

FizzyGreenWater · 05/06/2019 13:20

Roxanne and Maxine are really dated and not in a good way - they're both a bit awful.

I really like Josephine, which is of course personal taste - but honestly it's in a different class to the other two regardless of that. Classic and elegant, not fashionable (but that is a good thing) and most of all good nicknames - Jo, Jojo, Josie, Posy, Seph.

spanishwife · 05/06/2019 13:32

I LOVE Josephine, Josie or Jojo when she is young, Jo when she is older and wants to be more serious. It's a lovely name.

spanishwife · 05/06/2019 13:36

Roxane and Maxine are a bit 90s to me, I think in another 10-15 years they will come back into fashion but I don't like them now.

CakeRattleandRoll · 05/06/2019 13:55

Love Josephine, esp with nn Josie.

xSharonNeedlesx · 05/06/2019 14:06

@SamStephens how old is your Josephine? I have one and she’s 2. Also never met another of any age!

Out of your names op I obviously prefer Josephine, but also quite like Roxanne as well. Really dislike Maxine, just sounds too Middle aged to me.

Bluerussian · 05/06/2019 14:08

Josephine is nice, quite classy (unlike Maxine and Roxanne).

SevenWhinesForSevenMothers · 05/06/2019 14:10

Josephine is my favourite of the three.

TheRLodger · 05/06/2019 14:13

Prefer Josephine by far. Lots of cool nms too

As soon as I read Roxanne I started humming the song

Maxine just not that keen

cingolimama · 05/06/2019 14:16

Roxanne I adore - I always think of Cyrano, one of my favourite love stories. It's not American, it's French in origin. It's a strong, original name. Love it.

Josephine is nice too. Classy, reminds me of films from the 30's.

Sorry, hate Maxine.

FlorenceKettle · 05/06/2019 14:46

I think there are prettier names out there. Dislike all of them. Dated and none of them sound particularly nice

Pinkvoid · 05/06/2019 17:13

They’re all really dated but not in a cool way. Some names from the early 20th century are in vogue right now but I don’t think ones from the 60s/70s have made it yet. They’re just not very cool OP.

Maxine does have the Maxine Carr association for most people in the UK, not a nice association. Roxanne just makes me think of either a pornstar or prostitute. Josephine was my DGM’s best friend.

PCohle · 05/06/2019 17:20

Maxine - Carr. Or 80s northern housewife.
Roxanne - Prostitute.
Josephine - Jo March from Little Women. Lots of good NN options.

Fifthtimelucky · 05/06/2019 20:45

Definitely Josephine. Don't like the other two names.

I know 3 Josephines. One is in her 40s. The other 2 are 21 and 22.

Tillygetsit · 06/06/2019 23:16

Josephine makes me think of a frail delicate woman for some reason. (And I have a Joseph!)
Maxine makes me think of plasticine.
Roxanne is lovely if not shortened. Reminds me of Cyrano de whatsit.
