I really love the name Aida but i've always pronounced it in my head like (ay-da) and it's a name that's stuck with me for years, any thoughts on saying this name like that or the name in general? i know some people pronounce that spelling as (ayee-da)

I would say ayeeda, like in the opera. Aida pronounced ayda is the cross-stitch fabric to me.

If you want it pronounced ay-da, just call her Ada?

DramaAlpaca · 31/05/2019 18:33

I would also pronounce it ay-ee-da like the opera, unless I knew you wanted it to be pronounced like Ada.

Proseccofuelled · 31/05/2019 18:35

Why not just use Ada ? Beautiful classic pronounced the way you want

sincethereis · 31/05/2019 18:36

Ay da

AuntieStella · 31/05/2019 18:37

If you want the pronunciation 'ay-da' then I suggest you spell it Ada

Aïda (even if the diacritic is skipped) would normally be 'ay-ee-da'

ayupjade · 31/05/2019 18:44

Yeah i've only ever seen it as Aida written down on a game and i read it as (ay-da) so it has just stuck with me! but i do like Ada, i think that would be the best way otherwise i'll have to explain the pronunciation everytime lol

Ada is awful. Aïda is pretty.

ayupjade · 31/05/2019 18:51

I'm more fond of Aida for sure..

Pearlfish · 31/05/2019 18:53

Both are lovely names but Ada won't have the spelling / pronunciation issues.

ayupjade · 31/05/2019 18:55

@pearlfish that is true, maybe a nice nickname or double barrel name to make it longer?

Ada is lovely and won’t have any pronunciation or spelling issues.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 31/05/2019 21:09

Don’t hyphen! Separate names.

NorthernKnickers · 31/05/2019 22:44

I'd say Aida 'I-ee-da'. Like the opera. It is lovely that way...really 'pretty' sound as you say it, and such a classical name.

Ada...on the other hand...just sounds old to me, and quite ugly, in the same way that names like Thelma or Phyllis sound. Old fashioned without being classical. Sorry 😐

CassianAndor · 31/05/2019 22:48

Ada is an awful name, one of these old-fashioned-for-a-reason name so beloved of MNers, like Olive and Joan.

BackforGood · 31/05/2019 23:12

Agree with everyone else

Aida is pronounces "I - eee - da" like the opera.
If you want "Ay-da" you have to spell it Ada.

To me, Ada is a real 'old woman' name, but then, these are the names that have becaome really popular in the last 5 years or so, so might fit in.

Tillygetsit · 31/05/2019 23:14

I like both names but prefer Ada.

Tavannach · 31/05/2019 23:17

Aida - a yee da, like the opera.
Ada. - ai da.

Go with Ada.

AmyMaria2 · 31/05/2019 23:33

Robbie Williams wife is called Ayda But pronounced "Eye-da"

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 01/06/2019 01:16

I love Ada. I'd pronounce Aida like Eye-da from seeing it written down

tiramisu1 · 01/06/2019 07:01

Aida = Ah ee da

Ada = Ah da

tiramisu1 · 01/06/2019 07:12

You could also spell Aïda like this to make the pronunciation clear.

Icklepup · 01/06/2019 08:53

Ada
