Help! Induction next week and name block!

We have decided to not find out the sex of the baby and the date of induction has come around soon. I like Caoimhe for a girl, he likes Robert for a boy but we don’t even agree on those even though it’s the only two we have. If we like these what else do you think we’d like? I would really appreciate some help.

Andrew. Rowan. Daniel. Henry. Thomas. Christopher. Arthur. James

Caoihme. I don't know if you're looking for another Irish name, so I'll put a few in.
Aoife. Grainne. Aine. Bridget.
Cassie. Hannah. Bethany. Caitlin.
Florence. Abigail.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/05/2019 11:54

Keira. Kimberly.

Esindi · 26/05/2019 13:23

Thank you for your reply. I don’t mind Rowan and like Aine/Anya. I think the biggest problem is the day after I found out I was pregnant I decided on Caoimhe, now it’s really difficult to move from that. Especially as we may be looking for a boy’s name!

Hullo ! Just a wordnof warning, I have no clue how to pronounce Caoimhe. If you don't mind having to explain the spelling /pronunciation to some people though, you're probably fine.

One irish name I like is Siobhan for a girl.
Can you tell us why you dislike Robert, and why your dh dislikes Caoimhe ? That'd help us figure out what kind of names you might like.

Malyshek · 26/05/2019 15:07

Thinking about it, maybe you could find a name close to Caoimhe in pronunciation that your partner would like ? Like Camille or Callie or Cameron for instance.

Esindi · 26/05/2019 21:15

Hi, thank you. He doesn’t really like Caoimhe as he likes more traditional Scottish names (like Robert) where as I don’t like the more harsh sounding names and am more drawn to Irish or softer Eastern European names (my heritage- but because of this want an ‘a’ sound or letter at the end). Hope this helps help us!

Malyshek · 26/05/2019 21:56

Aaalright, so we're basically looking for an irish/scottish name that is traditional and maybe sound a bit slavic. Tall order for sureGrin

Okay, here are a few ideas :

Boy

Aidan (Ayden, Aedan)
Ainsley
Alistair
Bruce
Cinaed / Kenneth
Domhnall
Duncan
Finn
Hamish
Ninian
Tristan
Scott
Wallace

Girl

Catriona
Deirdre
Fiona
Keavy (apparently that's the anglicized version of Caoimhe)
Malina (féminine of Malcolm, but incidentally means strawberry in russian)
Morgana
Sorcha

Please let us know which ones you like or dislike particularly (if any) and we can go from there to try and make other suggestions and narrow it down !

HermioneMakepeace · 26/05/2019 21:58

Malina (féminine of Malcolm, but incidentally means strawberry in russian).

That’s a lovely name. And ticks all the boxes OP?

HermioneMakepeace · 26/05/2019 22:00

Zander is nice for a boy. It’s Slavic but also ‘butch’ enough for a Scot Grin.

Esindi · 26/05/2019 22:32

There’s some great names there! However, there’s quite a few that are in our immediate family. Out of them I like Morgana, Sorcha and Malina which I’ll talk to him about. He liked Fiona previously out of those but I don’t.
Unfortunately, the boy’s names are just not doing it for me though, I do like Zander but there’s already one who’s too close for us to use. I don’t know why I’m getting nothing from the boy’s names- my choices were Dimitri, Micah, Balthazar, Caelan and maybe Dominic which were all vetoed. I think this means that they will be a boy.

OP posts:
Malyshek · 26/05/2019 22:52

Huh. Well, if Dimitri was on your list I'll just go full russian on you Grin

  • Alexander (obviously works everywhere)
  • Sasha (also works for a girl)
  • Ivan (Also Istvan)
  • Emil (popular in Poland I think more than Russia)
  • Boris
  • Andrew/Andrey
  • Matthias
  • Michael / Mikael / Misha / Mikhail
  • Cael / Kyle
  • Max / Maximilian
  • Viktor
  • Niels
WaxOnFeckOff · 26/05/2019 23:11

Lorna for a girl? Other Scottish options: Morven, Vaila, Marsali, Mairi.

For a boy: Gregor, Blair, Brodie, Lawrence, Kerr, Struan. Torin, Innes.

Esindi · 26/05/2019 23:38

Oooh Vaila may be a good compromise if a girl! I’ve never heard it but it’s rather nice.
Unfortunately, he’s a bit closed to the full Russian but has been told to open him s mind. I had Alexandra/Alexandria/Alexander down with the nickname Sasha as a compromise name but strangely it was a no. We’re both teachers though so some names are just a no (just to add to the ease of name finding!)

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 26/05/2019 23:49

I'm glad you like Vaila Smile , place names are often used in Scotland for boys or girls.

Alexander with Sandy as a nickname?

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/05/2019 23:51

Keir, Cormac if you want to go more Irish, Calvin maybe?

HermioneMakepeace · 27/05/2019 00:03

Sasha is a beautiful name for a boy. I studied Russian at uni and my dream was to marry a Russian guy and have a son. I would have called him Sasha.

Esindi · 27/05/2019 00:25

He seems to be totally off the ‘Alex’ names so Sasha’s off too. Kier is ok but nothing is screaming at me for a boy which is really odd. It’s great how many names that are already in our family (sisters, brothers etc) have been suggested so you all must be on the right track!

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/05/2019 00:34

There is nothing wrong with Robert, it's just a bit "boring" maybe... :o

Just now thinking of other islands that might be suitable for boy - you have the whole Lewis, Harris or Arran thing, but how about Coll, Craig, Martin, Sanday (:)) or Tiree.

Could also add in Ailsa, Shona (Shuna) or Rhona (Rona) for girls away from the more popular Isla or Iona and Skye

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/05/2019 00:38

Grant, Fraser, Ross, Moray , Nairn, Cairn, Roderick, Murdo, Hamish?

Esindi · 27/05/2019 02:08

I agree wax. He likes a lot of your suggestions. I’m still not having a yes moment for the boy’s name and struggling to come away from Caoimhe but there’s some negotiation suggestions for a girl. Boy’s names are hard!

Sessy19 · 27/05/2019 08:00

I used to be a nurse, and Malina sounds very much like melena, which is a type of tarry poo associated with very ill people!! So I would not recommend!!

But there are plenty of other girl names that are really pretty here. Good luck xx

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/05/2019 08:01

If it helps, we struggled for months, came up with a shortlist and didn't use anything from it. DS1 wasn't named for 3 days. We didn't bother discussing it at all before DS2was born, he didn't have a name for 11 days. You have time, don't be rushed. Wait and meet the baby and then decide. We had a definite (or so we thought) girls name both times.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/05/2019 08:07

Rory or Ruairidh?

Esindi · 27/05/2019 09:43

Well we’re discussing it, every name I like he doesn’t and all the one’s that he likes I don’t. It’s rather strange as we usually agree on most things. Though we may have Misha as a middle name for a boy so thank you Mal!

OP posts:
Esindi · 27/05/2019 09:45

Oh and Ailsa and Alexandra (Sasha) are on the maybe girl’s list.
