Great way to test out your chosen name.

I saw a YouTube video about 'How to chose your babies name' and it had a great tip that I thought I'd share because I've found it a really useful way to test how I feel and how other perceive a name.

So when you go to Starbucks or Boost Juice (or some place that takes your name when you order), give your proposed baby name. It's a great opportunity to say it out loud, see how it feels, and to see others reaction - do they know how to say, spell, pronounce it?

What if it’s a boy? Confused

anothernotherone · 26/05/2019 05:13

Surely the flaw here is that you can only test girl's names if you're female or boy's names if you're the father? Otherwise the reaction you observe to the name Aurora might not be because it's fairly unusual but becoming fashionable and possibly going to sound like a very 2019 name due to a quick burst of increased popularity, but rather because you're 6 ft 3 and 22 stone with a beard, and it's more usually a girl's name...

You can give any name you like to Starbucks staff; they don't give a toss.

Joeybee · 26/05/2019 06:14

If it's a boy get your partner to give the name.
From having to spell out my name all my life, and having people say it wrong, I think this is a good way to test out other people's reactions to the name

Coffee Baristas don’t care. I often tell them my name is Lannister and they’ll scribble it on with a dead look in their eyes.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 26/05/2019 06:42

If they don’t care then the plan of seeing what the reaction you get from a name is flawed!

MrsMeSeeks · 26/05/2019 07:49

I don't think that's a bad idea at all! You aren't going to get much of a reaction, but you will get to see how easy it is for them to spell it right/pronounce it. And you get to hear how it sounds coming from someone in a real-life context - rather than two people mooning over their impending baby. I might give this a try.

Haha Teddybear45. That’s given me a good laugh and so true. I’ve said Mary or Dave before but maybe should try something with more difficulty 😂
I think this is a great risk free option to try names out with people you don’t know. If for nothing else, do it for the comedy of seeing what you can get them to write on the cup 😉

My sister gives the name Poppy instead of her real name and they even spell thag wrong 🙈 my friend is called Ruth and recently someone in Starbucks thought she said Cruz 😂😂😂

Willowkoko · 26/05/2019 22:34

Dh and I tried this when I was pregnant with DD, we were convinced it was a boy and really liked the name ‘dexter’ so I forced DH to give that name, Starbucks assistant barely acknowledged it and wrote ‘Daxson’ we had a good laugh about it

Anyone going to tell them their name is Balonz? Grin

anothernotherone · 27/05/2019 06:17

Starbucks staff mishear for their own amusement sometimes I think - can't blame them really. Also the work flow is what's important there and there's a lot of background noise next to colleagues using the coffee machines. DD was in there with friends called Anna and Theresa last week and mentioned that they write Emma and Terris on the cups!

Cuppa12345 · 27/05/2019 06:22

I don't buy Starbucks. I know that's an annoying response but meh. Can't you just call the baby the name when discussing it with your other half?

Lobsterquadrille2 · 27/05/2019 07:58

My sister said the test was to say to various people "can x come out to play?" To see how it sounded, and also to stand in a park full of children and shout the name.

I didn't feel the need to do either.

Heptapod · 27/05/2019 09:00

Baristas are disproportionately from non-native English speaking backgrounds, work in a noisy environment, and are busy doing their job, which involves scribbling approximations of hundreds of names on cups every shift.

Is any rational person going to alter a planned baby name because Josef or Natalya said ‘Come again?’ and then mis-spelled it on your latte? Hmm

OrdinarySnowflake · 27/05/2019 09:23

There is a good logic in getting other people to say the name and saying it out loud yourself. I know someone who named their dd with a name that finishes 'th', shes from the north but now lives in London, when her dd was about 4 she confided she might have picked a different name if she realised everyone would pronounce the ending as 'ff'.

HPandbean · 27/05/2019 13:21

Brilliant idea! I am definitely doing this Smile
