Following on from my last post suggestions for Welsh girls names that translate well outside of Wales. And keep it nice, was a bit taken aback by someone of the comments on my previous thread.....

OP posts:

I think Ynyra might be made up. Ynyr is an old name. It is pronounced UN-irr.

MikeUniformMike · 26/05/2019 18:47

Ynyra would be pronounced Un-URR-ah. Not keen on it.

EmrysAtticus · 26/05/2019 18:53

At the end of the day I would give your child a name you like. I am an Angharad and have lived in England for times and it hasn't bothered me in the slightest that people get my name wrong. I love my name :)

ProudmummytoMA · 26/05/2019 19:19

Some of my favourites are Seren, Bethan, Sian, Nia and Carys.

Seren and Bethan were on my shortlist for a girl... I've got 2 boys though!

beanaseireann · 26/05/2019 19:55

OwlBeThere
Yes Ireland is Eireann in Irish ( Gaelic) hence the shortened Erin.
Thank you all re pronunciation of Elleri.

floraloctopus · 26/05/2019 21:54

Eluned won’t work outside Wales

In my experience it works quite well.

OwlBeThere · 27/05/2019 00:30

@smokeanebone Eluned is el-EE-ned.

OwlBeThere · 27/05/2019 00:38

It’s really interesting to me @mikeuniformmike the names that are dated to you are pretty current to me like Carys, and to me are very dated like Tesni seem more current to you.
And the Eleri/meleri’s I know are all with the ‘a’ sound.
the north/south divide lives on Grin

MikeUniformMike · 27/05/2019 12:58

Carys, Bethan, and Sian were hugely popular in the 1960s, as were Rhian, Nia and Delyth. The middle name Wyn was hugely popular for boys and girls.
Tesni doesn't seem current but was never all that popular, it's just a name that doesn't sound different to how it looks.

MikeUniformMike · 27/05/2019 13:39

Eluned isn't El-ee-ned, it's El-IN-ed

missmouse101 · 27/05/2019 13:43

Lowri is gorgeous.

floraloctopus · 27/05/2019 13:52

I like Lowri too. The Eluned here is El-in-ed too.

PancakesAndMapleSyrup · 27/05/2019 15:44

Can I ask how angharad is pronounced?

UnconsideredTrifles · 27/05/2019 16:22

I think Cariad and Gwen are lovely and easy to pronounce.

My friend Angharad now goes by Ana because so many people in England thought she was introducing herself as "Anne Harad". I'd also probably avoid "Ei" at the start of a name - it seems to automatically become an 'eye' sound rather than an "ay" as it would be in Welsh (I know several Eiras pronounced Ira, for example).

Catrin works well too, and is lovely.

Guardsman18 · 27/05/2019 16:35

I find these posts fascinating (I don't get out much!) but how on earth can someone advise a non Welsh speaking person that Angharad is an easy name to pronounce in England?

I'm not trying to be a smart arse - I just don't get it.

Guardsman18 · 27/05/2019 16:38

@MikeUniformMike - have to disagree with you on the Eluned pronunciation I'm afraid. Unless I'm not getting it!

Usuallyinthemiddle · 27/05/2019 16:51

They are all lovely.

MikeUniformMike · 27/05/2019 17:57

Eluned is pronounced El LYNNE ed. Some Eluneds use Lyn as a nn.
S Wales and N Wales.

@Pancakesandmaplesyrup I would say Ann-harrad (Welsh, non Welsh speaker).

Alys
Bethan
Cerys
Sian

MikeUniformMike · 27/05/2019 18:24

I know several Ionas who are welsh speakers. It is a Welsh name, usually given to January babies. It is pronounced Yonna.
It's dated.
Dona is a welsh name. Pronounced Donna.
Angharad is Ang-HARR-ad, not Ang-Garrad or Ann-Harrad

MikeUniformMike · 27/05/2019 18:25

Sali
Mabli

Yellowpolkadot · 27/05/2019 18:41

Ffion would be my choice 😍

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2019 18:47
