What do people think of this girl name?

From what I can find it's a German/Frisian name pronounced like Micah (Mike-ah)

I used to speak to a client with this name at my old job and I've haven't been able to get it out of my head ever since. It's grown on me more and more!

I'm not currently pregnant but will be trying for a other possibly this year...

My friend says it more 'my key' , if that makes sense

MyInnerAlto · 24/05/2019 05:48

The '-ke' ending is a diminutive, and I am guessing the 'Mei/Mai' bit is from an old word for 'girl', so it means 'little girl'. Wiebke as suggested above means 'little woman'. And Marieke 'little Marie', which is very pretty.

Good GOD, as if you’ve come on to mumsnet to ask for opinions on a name that isn’t phonetically spelt!! 😂😂😂

It’s really pretty, but not overly feminine, it’s perfect. I love it. And, as per pp, I have a name that was popular for about 20yrs...and literally only had one spelling, and I am also asked how to spell it inordinately frequently 🤷‍♀️

TurquoiseAndPurple · 24/05/2019 09:24

@Sessy19 haha I know. How dare I! I'm so rude 😂

Thanks for all the replies so far, it's been interesting!

OH says he likes it. He knows of the word Mica as a geology term (he's a jeweller who works with crytals/gem stones) which is pronounced the same way. Everyday is a school day!

Maybe this is the language teacher in me, but it IS spelt phonetically. It's English that isn't! Fortunately, this means that most people from other countries, or who speak other languages, will not find it too confusing.

That doesn't mean people won't get it wrong - they will - but I'm just trying to reiterate that it's really not the biggest deal.

(If I had to write this out phonetically, like in a dictionary definition, it would be /maike/, or maybe a schwa on the end instead of an e. The English word "make" would be /meik/.)

I went to school with a Maike - always loved her name! She was a good egg

ClashCityRocker · 24/05/2019 11:20

I think it's a really nice name. Feminine without being frilly, strong without being overly right-on and would suit all ages and personalities, so not a name you need to worry about a child being able to 'pull off'.

Purplelavenders · 24/05/2019 11:45

Yes, it's definitely spelled phonetically. It's a very common German name. Mai-ke pronounced (in English sounds) My-keh.

Purplelavenders · 24/05/2019 11:46

so not a name you need to worry about a child being able to 'pull off'.

What does that even mean Confused?

FizzyGreenWater · 24/05/2019 11:57

Like it

I think Maike/Maaike is so pretty.

notso · 24/05/2019 12:39

I want to pronounce it like Mike in a North Wales accent.

TurquoiseAndPurple · 24/05/2019 13:40

@Purplelavenders

I think they meant that there are names that children can't pull off. For instance a German friend of mine names her SON Francesco and always felt like it was a big strong name for such a small baby/child. And then you have frilly cutesy names that children can pull off but adults can't.

I have a boy named Micah 😊. Constantly correcting people too lol

Purplelavenders · 24/05/2019 14:27

See, my brain would say Mee cah when I read Micah. But of course I would try to remember after being told Smile.
