Edward Elizabeth

For a boy I like Joseph and Edward but my partner only likes Edward. I'm not 100% sure it's the one though.

For a girl my favourites are Nancy and Julia. My partner only likes Elizabeth which I like but I'm not sure. Also which nickname is the best Beth, Betty, Libby, Betsy, Ellie or El?

I like all of them but I'm not sure I love them. Opinions please. Thank you.

I have never liked Edward for some reason, but I adore Joseph/Joe.

Nancy is fabulous. Julia is fine.

For Elizabeth I love Libby. Or Beth.

flumpybear · 14/05/2019 06:42

You need to keep
Looking - you're clearly not happy with either but your partner is being unfair just having two names only

floraloctopus · 14/05/2019 06:44

Either name is nice but not together as in the thread title - imagine if a family decided to go with a combo male/female name as a choice in case of a child being trans when older.

TatianaLarina · 14/05/2019 07:52

Love Edward and love Nancy. I’d let him keep Edward if you can keep Nancy.

Really dislike Elizabeth - long, clunky, dowdy and all the diminutives are pants.

PlatypusLeague · 14/05/2019 08:23

No need to specify a nickname yet, there's plenty of time,

Joseph Edward or Julia Elizabeth are the nicest combinations IMO.

FamilyOfAliens · 14/05/2019 08:26

We have an Elizabeth in our school and that’s her name. No cutesy nickname for her - she’s fab.

MrsBertBibby · 14/05/2019 08:26

I love Betsy as a nn.

PlatypusLeague · 14/05/2019 08:28

I like Liza as nickname for Elizabeth. Liz sounds quite dated. Beth is OK. Betty and Betsy are too cutesy. Also like Elspeth as a related name.

Rainandwine · 14/05/2019 08:40

Get him to come up with 10 names of each & you might find he surprises you

Whatwillhappentomorrow · 14/05/2019 09:40

Thanks for all the advice. I think the most difficult part is finding something that you both agree on.

I like both Edward (I would call him Teddy/Ted) and Elizabeth (Beth or Betsy for me).

MikeUniformMike · 14/05/2019 13:37

Edward - Eddy, Elizabeth - Lizzie.

areyoubeingserviced · 14/05/2019 13:38

I like Joseph. Not to fond of Edward , sounds a bit stuffy

areyoubeingserviced · 14/05/2019 13:38

Too

Hatemadeupwords · 14/05/2019 13:40

You made me wonder if you were going to call your child Edward Elizabeth so as not to impose gender. I am relieved you are not.

Edward, love Ted and Woody as nn.
Elizabeth, love Lizzy and Betty as nn.

Flamingosnbears · 14/05/2019 14:29

Edward's great I have an Edward and get nothing but compliments you have to like the NN's he's in nursery and the teachers all call him Eddie which he's fine with.

Joseph is OK prefer Joel

Flamingosnbears · 14/05/2019 14:30

Elizabeth is lovely and it gives you lots of options you could call her Eliza as a Nn...

Alena92 · 14/05/2019 15:33

I love Joseph and Edward.
Really don’t like Nancy and Julia but I like Elizabeth. My favourite Elizabeth nickname is Bess but personally I’d choose a nickname when the baby is here

userabcname · 14/05/2019 16:06

I like all the names to be honest but it sounds as though the real issue here is agreeing on one! I don't think it's fair for your partner to 'only' like Elizabeth. If necessary, scratch all the names you've thought of so far and come up with a shortlist of 3 names you both really like. See if you can both find something you love OR a couple of options you'd be happy with, then name baby when he/she arrives.

Whatwillhappentomorrow · 14/05/2019 16:10

Thank you all. It is good to hear a range of opinions to put the names into perspective.

Yes I should have probably taken a little bit more time in the thread title and put 'and' inbetween. I can see it looks a little strange.

I have asked my partner to find us a list of names just to double check this is the shortlist.

I wasn't meaning to be rude, just read so much on MN.

Whatwillhappentomorrow · 15/05/2019 05:43

No you're fine. It's understandable in the current climate that people may have a second look.

Fingers crossed my partner comes up with a decent list of names. If I write any down they just get a big fat no.

DS has a friend called Edward who is always known as Ed. It really suits him. He has a sister called Elizabeth who doesn't have a nn so always called by her full name.

Mintypea5 · 15/05/2019 06:00

Bess and Bessie are my fave Elizabeth nicknames. I prefer Eliza in general

MercyBodle · 15/05/2019 06:36

I feel sorry for the way your partner has been in this process. How come you have to consider his names but he doesn't have to consider yours. This is how people end up back here in a few months with name regret. Try to keep finding something that you both can love.

That said, I love Edward and don't mind Joseph. And I like that Edward has heaps of nn variations you could use as well - Ned, Ed, Eddy, Ted, Teddy. I do love Joe as nn for Joseph too.

Elizabeth is lovely, and Libby is one of my favourite nns. I love Julia more though, as it's a very stylish and under-used classic. I like Nancy too - it has a lot of character and 'bounce'!
