Help with initials

Please settle a debate with me and my DP.... would it put you off a name, if the initials spelt a word out.... not an offensive word, just something like 'ARM' or LEG'?

A strange one, I know Hmm

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
sakura06 · 11/05/2019 18:18

I didn't give this any thought and my child's initials spell EAR (without surname). I was a bit put out when I got a letter addressed to them, but I still love the names, so it doesn't matter.

Shadow1234 · 11/05/2019 18:27

I had to quickly run through my 3 childrens initials before replying, because it was never something I had ever thought about tbh. Cannot remember when I last saw my Initials written down together either. (perhaps it does happen more nowadays in school or work, but I wouldn't know, as my children are adults and I am retired).

SnowdropFox · 11/05/2019 18:33

It probably would tbh. I know someone who's LOs initials spell ELF. It's a Christmas baby and the parents are both quite small and big eyed. Didn't ask if they did it on purpose...

Pegaroo · 11/05/2019 18:39

I would be put off...could you shuffle the middle name?

Soubriquet · 11/05/2019 18:42

No I wouldn’t

Especially if it isn’t something like ASS

MikeUniformMike · 11/05/2019 20:40

ARM, LEG etc are ok.
VD, STD etc aren't

DramaAlpaca · 11/05/2019 21:33

I wouldn't do it. I'd probably put another middle name in.

Pythonesque · 11/05/2019 21:41

I think it is definitely something to be cautious about. Don't give a child's potential primary school tormentors too much of a gift ...
(doi we have a problematic surname that can't be escaped, but we were certainly going to avoid initials that caused problems with it, ruling out a host of lovely names at a stroke! I grew up with a difficult surname too and the worst possible option would have been to hyphenate though some of our friends thought that would be perfect ...)

Mine are LOL 😆

Ds2 is LLL - he’s either going to be a superhero or a villain!

VictoriaBun · 11/05/2019 21:56

My nan was FAT. She was a teeny tiny lady as well.
I'm sure lots of ladies who took their husbands name ended up with odd initials on marriage.

Torsz · 11/05/2019 21:58

We've avoided middle names starting with A as the initials would be CAR - nothing wrong with it really, I'd just prefer for them not to spell anything ☺️

EL8888 · 11/05/2019 22:02

Depends if it’s something stupid e.g. BUM. We would consider it but in our profession we use our initials a lot

BikeRunSki · 11/05/2019 22:03

I know an ARM and a JAB, who became JAR on marriage.

I don't they find their initials to be a problem.

Dad was Mr MR Surname, which we used to find hilarious, especially when the band Mr Mister came along,

NoSauce · 11/05/2019 22:36

ARM, LEG ok
TIT, DIK, NOB, not.

NuffSaidSam · 12/05/2019 03:06

I think a word is fine as long as it's not embarrassing or offensive.

I'd avoid:

DIK
DIC
DIX
TIT
NOB
BUM
BUT
ASS
COK
COX
COC
WET
HOR
GAY
DIV
GIT
RAT
DUM

There's quite a lot to avoid really!
