Outside this MN world

I’ve seen Camilla on a few threads recently, and it made me think.

I love the name Camilla and have wanted to use it in the past, but never really did, as chickened out.
In this MN world of names we tend to appreciate how classic the name is, and value it’s tradition etc, and we care about popularity etc. But I feel like in the outside world, the world doesn’t feel the same and just wouldn’t understand Camilla.

The reasons I rendered Camilla unusable in the real world was:

-too posh, may make you look like Hyacinth Bucket.

  • Camilla PB obviously
  • it’s incredibly unpopular, so I don’t even think posh people use it anymore! So possibly a dated name.

Is Camilla actually a usable name?

Other names I’ve noticed that MN tend to like that the real world doesn’t get: Juno, keziah, Marnie

Of course it's usable. Camilla is beautiful.

ViolentGin · 11/05/2019 08:51

I'm in my 20s and went to school with a Camilla (nn Millie). Never thought anything of it, it is just a normal and quite pretty name.

Sparklysunflower · 11/05/2019 08:54

Op, you're way overthinking it. If you like Camilla, use it!

Wilmaaaa · 11/05/2019 09:00

Oh I’m Not pregnant! Just thinking about previous dd’s. But all this recent Camilla love made me think.

I really love it but hate the nickname "Cam" for some reasonBlush

oohbubbles1 · 11/05/2019 11:35

I really like name Camilla, never met anyone with it but seems totally usable. Also, I have two (much) younger sisters and they watch a TV show, in which there is an apparently v famous actress called Camila, so again, there are people which aren't posh which have the name and it is known :)

NuffSaidSam · 11/05/2019 12:51

MN posters are in the real world too, it just might be a different bit of the real world to the bit you live in.

I know a Camilla, a Juno and two Marnie's under 10. Have never met a Keziah. I think Marnie is heading for a real popularity surge actually.

It may be the case that using Camilla would make the people in your real life think you are too posh etc., but that would not be the view of the entire 'real world'.

Camilla is absolutely useable.

I personally think it's dreadful and the association with Parker-Bowles is too strong, but I wouldn't so much as raise an eyebrow if someone else used it. It's a perfectly normal name.

AuntieStella · 11/05/2019 13:04

I don't like Camilla because in my formative years she was the horrible cousin in 'A Pony for Jean'

(And if you don't like the MN community - why are you asking on MN for opinions? MNers are real people (even though trolls walk among us) and are posting their real thoughts)

WildCherryBlossom · 11/05/2019 14:12

I met a child called Camilla recently. I associate it more with my age group though. I think it's an ok name but would never choose it because my husband and 2 of my previous boyfriends have had exes with the name.

WildCherryBlossom · 11/05/2019 14:13

I know 3 Keziahs, 1 Juno and 2 Marnies of varying ages.

Calixtine · 11/05/2019 17:45

I know a Kezia, two Junos, a Camille and have heard of lots of little Marnies.

I’ve never met an Astrid even though it seems to be on a lot of lists on here. I love it.

whohaa · 11/05/2019 17:55

I think it's only the oldies who are against it. Younger people would accept it because of people like Camila cabello.
I'm somewhere in the middle- not old, not young. I like it and do associate it with Camilla PB. I like her. She's a good person so why not use the name?

Baloonphobia · 11/05/2019 17:56

I have a cousin with a dd called Juno.

abcriskringle · 11/05/2019 18:01

As a teacher, I've found the range of names out there is incredible. People call their children all manner of odd/unusual things - if anything, MN is quite tame! I wouldn't bat an eyelid at Camilla. The couple I've taught shortened to Millie.

itssquidstella · 11/05/2019 18:05

I love the name Camilla and it would be near the top of my list if it weren't for the fact that I can't abide the name Millie, and I think it would inevitably end up being shortened.

Happyandglorious · 11/05/2019 20:23

I love Camilla and Cami or Millie as nn.
Many posters advise, and I agree, that if you love the name then use it.
Its all totally subjective and only a few names are seen as objectively unusable like Adolf or Myra...

MM19 · 11/05/2019 21:40

Interesting that you can be a “good person” whilst sleeping with someone else’s husband for 18 years.

I know several Camillas of various ages; it’s a perfectly nice name, and Millie is a sweet nickname.

Bobcat249 · 11/05/2019 21:45

Someone I used to know was called Camille. Slightly more acceptable.

(Cam-eel)

Wilmaaaa · 11/05/2019 23:06

@happyandglorious surprisingly if you check the stats, Myra and Camilla are very very similar in popularity!!

@auntiestella and I love the MN community! But I feel that generally we tend to be more like minded in opinions (most of the time!) compared to the outside world.

Wilmaaaa · 11/05/2019 23:15

I just checked actually, there were more babies called Myra in 2017 than Camilla...No Adolph’s if you’re wondering...

NuffSaidSam · 12/05/2019 02:59

Camilla PB is still very 'current', whereas Myra Hindley is less so. That combined with the general popularity of short 'ah' ending names (Mila, Ella, Isla, Rosa, Mia etc) probably explains the slight resurgence of Myra as an acceptable name choice.

I think Vera is due a comeback.
