How would you spell it?
How would you pronounce it (I know of three pronunciations used in Ireland)?

I like it and would pronounce it like Connell, as in O'Connell Street.

I knew a really gorgeous Conal when I was a teen. Lost the power of speech whenever he was around Grin

Quintella · 07/05/2019 16:07

Although some Conals probably rhyme it with Donal. But my handsome Conal didn't so I don't either.

Pearpickinpenguin · 07/05/2019 16:07

It is Co-nal, like Co as in Co-op. I don't like it though sorry. I also don't like Conan if that helps though.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 07/05/2019 16:08

Pronounced like O’Connell.

Gooseysgirl · 07/05/2019 16:10

I would pronounce it 'connell' too... I like it, but it wouldn't be my favourite Irish name ever

badtime · 07/05/2019 16:13

Would you spell it with one 'l' or two?

SaltSpoon · 07/05/2019 16:14

Gprgeous name, pronounced like Connell, spell with one 'l'

Quintella · 07/05/2019 16:16

Conal looks better than Conall. The second L seems a bit flaithulach.

badtime · 07/05/2019 16:28

Yay. I like the Conal spelling and Connell pronunciation.

I live in England, but might end up back across the water depending on how far society crumbles after Brexit (if it ever happens) so I wanted to check it was an okay name these days.

I'd pronounce it Cun (like gun) al (soft a, almost an uh sound). One l.

Fiontar649 · 07/05/2019 19:43

I know several Conals. Lovely name.
Pronounced as per MotherForkinShirtBalls

pipsqueakthethird · 07/05/2019 20:09

It's a bit awkward though isn't it because unless you know the same (outside Ireland not well known) the spelling Conal indicates the pronunciation should be cone-al (like zonal, tonal etc). To be pronounced the way people are saying you would expect a double n - Connal. So it might depend where you live/whether you/child will mind correcting people

pipsqueakthethird · 07/05/2019 20:10

*name not same

ExPresidents · 07/05/2019 20:19

I love it. I’d pronounce it Connell too.

Marlena1 · 07/05/2019 20:21

Would rhyme with tunnel. I love it

Quintella · 07/05/2019 20:22

the spelling Conal indicates the pronunciation should be cone-al

My friend is a Donal living in London, he says people nearly always think it's pronounced Donald minus the d.

DramaAlpaca · 08/05/2019 00:48

I know two, both spelled Conal & pronounced Connell. Lovely name.

Donal & Conal don't sound the same because Donal should have a fada on the 'o' (it so annoys me that I can't do the bloody fadas on my tablet). Not everyone bothers with it, though.

HarrietM87 · 08/05/2019 09:04

I like the Conall spelling. It’s not pronounced cone-al as there’s no fada, so definitely like Connell.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 08/05/2019 19:36

Is it a regional thing?

I’m from NI and say it like Co-nul, DH is from Dublin and says it like Cun-ul.

It’s one of those names that you’d have to make peace with the various pronounciations I think.

Pearpickinpenguin · 09/05/2019 07:41

Nope because Im a born and reared Dub and any Conals here are pronounced like my previous post Co-nal like Co-op.

Coffeeaddict14xo · 05/12/2024 08:43

Is the spelling Conáll or Conál?

salamithumbs · 05/12/2024 11:09

I'm from Dublin, I have a friend Conal pronounced like in O connell street!

Mearabade · 05/12/2024 12:02

I worked with a Connal. Double N. He was from Dublin.

I like it!

PuddingAunt · 05/12/2024 22:39

Conal
Short o, short a. The a is a schwa.
No fadas. No double letters.

I have never met anyone who pronounces it any other way.
