Thoughts please on girls name Marguerite, to be Maggie when little and perhaps Margot when older.

Would be sister to Bert and Florrie.

Had decided on Nancy but now not sure it's interesting enough.

Thanks Smile

Marguerite is a lovely name which gives her (not you) lots of choices when she's older.

Love Marguerite - makes me think of The Darling Buds of May Smile

MondeoFan · 07/05/2019 20:53

I like Margot and Marguerite but I wouldn't associate Margot as the shortened version

RachelRosie · 07/05/2019 21:07

I toyed with Margot and Marguerite for our DD who we knew we would call Maggie, but worried about her having a "proper name".

We ended up going with just Maggie, and pleased we did. Marguerite is lovely, but seemed a bit much for us.

JenSFP · 07/05/2019 22:34

@RachelRosie thanks for your message - that's exactly how we feel! Ultimately we'd call her Maggie but I'm a bit old fashioned in my obsession with having a long "proper" name in case they ever want/need it. Ridiculous I know!

Gorgeous

My dd has a name that has multiple nn options. E.g. katherine: kitty, Katie, Kath, etc.
I assumed i would go with a nn, but none were right for her. She likes a nn of her name, but EVERYONE uses her full name only. She's known at home by something totally unrelated to her name. So getting to my point, you can call her what you want, but she may end up being "geety" if that is what sticks!!!

DramaAlpaca · 08/05/2019 00:06

I like Nancy with your other names.

But that might be because I don't like either Maggie or Margot Grin

And I agree with a pp that Daisy is the traditional diminutive of Marguerite.

PCohle · 08/05/2019 00:40

I always think choosing a name with very specific ideas about the nickname you like is setting yourself up for years of irritation when your child/her friends decide otherwise.

Margot just makes me think maggot.

Expressedways · 08/05/2019 00:49

Maggie is lovely. It doesn’t need a longer version. Margot is great but Maggie as a nickname for Margot is strange. I’d only use Margot if you wanted to call her Margot. I also really like Nancy- interestingly I’ve met lots of baby Margot’s and Maggie's recently but no Nancy’s! If you think Nancy isn’t interesting enough then I’m not convinced your other names are any different. That said I really like them all! Except for Marguerite which makes me think of the pizza or the cocktail.

SemperIdem · 08/05/2019 01:11

Marguerite will cause no end of spelling issues (I spent a long time living at an address with that in it’s name) but is lovely. I would use Daisy as a nn if using Marguerite (it’s the literal translation).

Margot is lovely on its own.

Maggie is dreadful.

I love Margot! Second would be Marguerite and third, by a long long way (for me), would be Nancy.

MercyBodle · 08/05/2019 05:34

I think your idea is great. Marguerite is a lovely and not over-used name (and I think it's nicer than Margaret), and having both Maggie and Margot as lovely shorter options is a terrific idea. Great with the sibling names as well.

Whatwillhappentomorrow · 08/05/2019 06:17

Nancy. Lovely and I have only ever met one Nancy in my whole life so it's not overused. I dislike the others.

daisypond · 08/05/2019 07:22

I love Marguerite. Maggie or Rita for short, or Daisy. Rita is super.

JenSFP · 08/05/2019 07:47

@PCohle @Nnnnnineteen you both make very good points about nicknames! Thank you

My little girls a margot. Always amaizes me how many people dont realise the T is silent. Something id genuinely never thought of before she was born.

While it's originally a French name, it's been adapted by several languages - in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia Margot is a common name that is always pronounced Mar-gott.

Bumblebeesmum · 08/05/2019 09:20

I love Nancy
