How would you pronounce Eira?

I'm Welsh, but live in England and trying to work out if non-Welsh people would struggle with it.

Eye-ra?
It's pretty. Smile

Ey-ra (Welsh)

It means snow, so be careful when you use it.

(My friend called her February born baby Summer. Confused)

WinterWillow · 30/04/2019 12:25

Eira is a lovely name and a friend of mine has a daughter called Eira. We are welsh speakers and her partner is English but he manages fine. They also have a son called Osian which he can also pronounce with ease.

MoreSlidingDoors I really don't think it matters when you use a name. We have an August born DD called Autumn. We also have a son called Noah and he certainly didn't build an Arc Hmm

RaffertyFair · 30/04/2019 12:29

I would be torn between eye-ra
and aira (like the country Eire)

KnitterOfSocks · 30/04/2019 12:34

My daughter is Eira and we live in England, everyone says it eye-ra.

In Welsh (where my husband comes from) it's more like a-rah (a as you would say a, b,c,d etc)

SoupDragon · 30/04/2019 12:35

Ear-a to rhyme with nearer more or less.

SoupDragon · 30/04/2019 12:36

I've never heard it spoken though.

I really don't think it matters when you use a name. We have an August born DD called Autumn.

“This is my daughter. Born Christmas Eve, so we called her Brenda.”

My Welsh-speaking friend from deepest West Wales pronounces it EY-ra (Ey to thyme with hay) but my Welsh-speaking mum from South Wales pronounced it EYE-ra.

MadeForThis · 30/04/2019 13:04

Air Ah

Flamingosnbears · 30/04/2019 13:15

Ey - ra

NerdyBird · 30/04/2019 18:07

Eye-ra. It's v pretty, there's a girl in my dd class with the name.

ShinyMe · 30/04/2019 19:16

I'm a Welsh speaker, so I'd say EY-ra. I'd be worried that in England though, it could end up sounding like a bit like IRA.

soundsystem · 30/04/2019 19:45

Ey-Ra with a rolled r?

Cbeebiesrehab · 30/04/2019 19:52

I think this name divides even welsh people on its pronunciation!
I’m from the South and say Eye-ra. But I know others who say Ey-ra (like hay)

Saisong · 30/04/2019 19:56

A-ra

Sleepinglemon · 30/04/2019 21:12

Ha! Thanks all. A proper mix. I'm from north Wales so would say Ay-ra.

OP posts:
SemperIdem · 01/05/2019 00:51

I’d say ay-ra.

South Walian myself but heavily influenced by my first language Welsh speaking family from the North.

Angharad07 · 01/05/2019 00:58

I’d say ey-rah and I’m from South Wales. My mum is from the valleys and would say ay-rah. We argue about my son’s Welsh name a lot.

*both fluent Welsh speaking

FizzyGreenWater · 01/05/2019 13:38

More an ay than an eye, but in England you will have Ira. Not so pretty!
