Cara or Kara?

Cara is the Irish spelling, meaning friend, Kára is Norse and means little wild one or curly one.

I like both, think Cara is more likely to be spelt right but love the Valkyrie link and meanings of Kára. Dh (who is Irish) prefers Kára.

Halp!

Go for the one you prefer!

Beachbodynowayready · 30/04/2019 11:58

Which goes best with your surname initial?

Zhx3 · 30/04/2019 11:58

If I had another dd I would call her Cara. I met a Caragh once - I liked that but we don't have any Irish connection!

ludog · 30/04/2019 12:38

I have a Cara but I think wild curly one would be a much better description of her Grin

NutRoastNancy · 30/04/2019 12:43

Definitely not with a K!!

Peachbubble · 30/04/2019 12:45

I prefer Cara

BlueMerchant · 30/04/2019 12:46

Cara. It will hardly ever be spelt correctly the other way and your DD will grow up fed up of explaining to people about it.

LesLavandes · 30/04/2019 12:48

Cara

Chachaslider · 30/04/2019 12:49

Yes people will spell it with a C so it will save correction all the time. Lovely name congrats.

Thecaravan · 30/04/2019 12:49

Me too ludog Grin She's definitely wild and curly! Go with whichever you prefer.

EngagedAgain · 30/04/2019 13:07

Go with the one you prefer. I don't necessarily think people will automatically get it wrong if it's spelt with a K. Either way people will ask. Until Cara Delevingne came along I would have assumed it was K.

Flamingosnbears · 30/04/2019 13:14

Go for the one you prefer, write them both down then you can get an idea as to which you prefer to write and the look of.

Sophronia · 30/04/2019 15:44

Cara

florascotia2 · 30/04/2019 17:10

OP - I don't think they are pronounced the same. The Norse Valkyrie Kara has an accent over the first 'a', which I think would make the name sound more like 'Kawra'. But I'm definitely not an expert, so I hope that Scandinavian Mumsnetters can come along and either confirm or deny this.

Genuinely one of the few names where I like both options. Slightly prefer Cara, but Kara is fine, though personally I would avoid using the accent.

Ceebs85 · 30/04/2019 19:27

Cara is much nicer

MikeUniformMike · 30/04/2019 19:34

Cara

cptartapp · 30/04/2019 19:48

Cara. Much softer.

DramaAlpaca · 30/04/2019 19:57

I like both. I might have a slight preference for Kara, but without the accent.

MissParple · 30/04/2019 20:13

If you both prefer the Kara spelling go for the Kara spelling! Smile
