Welsh names that are easy to pronounce

FairfaxAikman · 29/04/2019 11:31

I am Scottish, DH is half Welsh and we live in Scotland.
DS has the most Scottish name it's possible to have (through accident rather than design as he's named after people). Not quite Angus Fergus MacDonald but not far off - paint him blue and he'd yell Freedom!

Anyhoo, for DC2 we'd like to incorporate a Welsh name somewhere in honour of DHs mum. Sex currently unknown.
I like Eira for a girl but think it will probably end up being mispronounced up here.
Suggestions please for Welsh names that won't be mangled by my fellow Scots Grin

Mari (Welsh spelling), Mairi (Scottish spelling)

Historydweeb · 30/04/2019 20:51

Eira (EYE-rah) or (AY-rah) means 'snow'
Cariad (Carry-ad) meaning love

Osian (OSH-an)
Iolo (Yolo)

TatianaLarina · 30/04/2019 21:17

Carys, Guinevere, Manon

TatianaLarina · 30/04/2019 21:19

Love Osian for a boy and it’s also a Scot name - Ossian.

Ioan, Huw, Rhodri, Gethin.

beanaseireann · 01/05/2019 00:23

Carys or Seren for a girl

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 01/05/2019 09:53

Nia, Bethan, Cerys, Rhiannon, Rhian, Seran, Cariad, Sian, Megan, Taryn

Geraint, Dylan, Deri, David, Rhys, Lloyd, Iestyn, Sion,

Dullblue · 01/05/2019 09:56

Gethyn

nespressowoo · 01/05/2019 11:27

Gwennan is lovely.

MikeUniformMike · 01/05/2019 13:42

It's nicer spelt Gwenan. It's a bit dated perhaps and like other names ending in -an, people will say -un.
Cariad is pronounced Car-yad not Carry-ad.
Gethin is not spelt Gethyn.

Disneymum1993 · 01/05/2019 13:43

My dd is seren i love it x

Dullblue · 01/05/2019 14:02

Ummmm.. My husband is called Gethyn, so rest assured it can be spelt both ways!

ThanksItHasPockets · 01/05/2019 14:27

Gethyn is presumably pronounced geth-un, as distinct from Gethin?

Divgirl2 · 01/05/2019 22:39

Welsh is a very phonetic language so Gethyn = geth-uhn (Gethin is pronounced exactly as it looks). If it's spelt Gethyn and pronounced Gethin I'm going to wage 50p his parents aren't Welsh speakers.

Gethin is a beautiful name, I wish my DP hadn't vetoed it because it's one of my absolute favourites.

Bryn
Gareth
Geraint
Rhodri

Blodwyn (I love this. I had an auntie blod!)
Gwen
Rhia
Catrin
Nia

ConfCall · 01/05/2019 23:01

Another vote for Gethin. Also love Rhys.

I’ve liked Enfys since a woman with that name was on Pointless several years ago. Had never heard of it. Also like Seren and Ffion.

Dullblue · 01/05/2019 23:08

Pembrokeshire born and bred, both speakers.
Sorry I've offended all the name police...! I also happen to know a couple of others who spell it like that.
Personally I dont see what the big deal is

ThriftyMcThrifty · 02/05/2019 03:47

I love Idris for a boy/

MarchionessOfCholmondeley · 02/05/2019 04:38

Betsan

Ianto (pronounced Yan-to) for a boy

MikeUniformMike · 02/05/2019 10:55

Blodwyn should be spelt Blodwen. Rhia is missing an n.
I'd pronounce Gethyn as Geth-in - in as in the english word, but in Gethin the i is like in the english word big.
I know lots of Gethins but no Gethyns.
It might be a regional variation on the name.

CIT80 · 02/05/2019 10:58

Osian (oh-Shan) Iwan, Gethin, Owain,

Tirion, Elena, Mabli, Menna, Mari,

MikeUniformMike · 02/05/2019 11:11

Osian is Osh-an (as as in can). I know lots of them. Not one of them says it as Oh-shan.

dw23 · 02/05/2019 18:21

Enid is my favourite and it means life or spirit 😍

MikeUniformMike · 02/05/2019 19:06

Enid pronounced the welsh way (En-id) is lovely.

Sleepinglemon · 02/05/2019 19:21

Nel
Non
Medi (especially if you're due in September)
Cadi

I find even names you'd think would be easy to pronounce are mispronounced outside of Wales e.g Nia said Near or Eleri said ELeri

Bryn
Glyn
Gwyn
Griff (would argue this is a legit variation and works better outside Wales)

MikeUniformMike · 02/05/2019 20:22

Non is lovely too.
