As above!

Am interested to see if anyone comes up with the pronunciation that I'm aiming for...

Yeshka?

EmpressLesbianInChair · 25/04/2019 16:47

I think Yeshka too.

ChesterBelloc · 25/04/2019 16:47

Ooooooh....!!!!

OP posts:
2cupsofcoffee · 25/04/2019 16:48

Yeshka

UCOinanOCG · 25/04/2019 16:49

I never seen it before and might have guessed at Jeshka but Yeshka makes sense.

99point9FahrenheitDegrees · 25/04/2019 16:50

I would have said Jeshka. But tbh it's the kind of name I would ask first how to say.

TheBrilloPad · 25/04/2019 16:50

I think I'd have guessed Jess-cah (like trying to say "Jessica" in two syllables

troppibambini · 25/04/2019 16:50

Jeshka? But I would check if I was correct as I'm not sure.

Honeyroar · 25/04/2019 16:50

Jess Ca. Strange name.

MrsSchadenfreude · 25/04/2019 16:50

Yeshka. Czech?

BertrandRussell · 25/04/2019 16:51

I would have no idea because I don’t know what the upsidedown circumflex does to the s.
And I am seriously over educated!

Most of the people she meets in life will say Jeska as spelled. Sorry.

FraterculaArctica · 25/04/2019 16:51

Yeshka. But Czech/Slovak is the only language and heritage I can think of where it works.

Expressedways · 25/04/2019 16:52

Jess-Ca - like a toddler trying to say Jessica??

ChesterBelloc · 25/04/2019 16:57

I had no idea either, Bertrand! Trying to find a notation for my preferred pronunciation...

Of those who said "Yeshka", I'm curious to know if any of you have a Yiddish background..? Or studied linguistics..?!

Neither but I have Polish colleagues so I was extrapolating from them.

SoupDragon · 25/04/2019 17:00

I guessed Yesska with a "possibly yeshka" after thought. I figured it was Y rather than J because of the š oddly enough, although I didn't know what it did to the s 😂😂

I am English as far back as I know.

Spudlet · 25/04/2019 17:04

I would have gone for something along the lines of Yethka!

I used to work with the European Parliament so got a little bit of practice with pronouncing Polish (and other nationalities, but Poland was a key country for us) MEPs names. Well. I tried my best, anyway Blush

No clue about the 'š' though so that was a complete and almost certainly incorrect guess.

Spudlet · 25/04/2019 17:06

Actually, thinking further back, I probably would have gone for a middle 'shh' sound with a bit more reflection - but it wasn't my first instinct. It's been a few years.

CeeCee88 · 25/04/2019 17:07

Jeshka too. I've got a ž in my last name, so am assuming it gets pronounced the same way.

grasspigeons · 25/04/2019 17:07

I'd go for Yeshka if I was saying it

I come across a lot of European names in my job so am getting used to other countries phonics.

I have no idea if I am right though.

bellinisurge · 25/04/2019 17:10

Yeshka. Linguistics background, op. I picked up the odd Yiddish word. Doesn't look like a Biblical name to me.

ThatCurlyGirl · 25/04/2019 17:11

Jeska

Calixtine · 25/04/2019 17:12

Yeshka. No Yiddish background but I speak two Slavic languages and have a working knowledge of the others.

SoftBlocks · 25/04/2019 17:14

Yeshka

KateyKube · 25/04/2019 17:16

Jes-ka
