Brother or sister for Arabella

Enwi · 19/04/2019 10:07

We’re expecting baby no.2 and we’re looking for some name ideas to go with Arabella. We don’t know the sex.
Some ideas we like:
Rupert James
Tolemy
Everest
and for a girl:
Thea
Ottilie (this would have been my choice for DD1, but my partner was very opposed to it. Less so this time around)
Elowen
Clara
Savanna
Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. With my daughter we waited until she was born to choose a name thinking we would ‘just know’... and we didn’t! We didn’t name her until she was two weeks old and even then it was only because of huge pressure from the hospital. I’d like to have a name picked out this time.

Rupert James is lovely.
Tolemy is a no from me.
Everest sounds awful, I just think of double glazing.

Thea is ok but nothing special.
Ottilie is a no from me.
Not keen on Elowen. It’s a bit of a mouthful.
Clara is ok.
Savanna is awful.

Arabella the name of your daughter is lovely.

FiremanKing · 19/04/2019 10:23

Isabelle would go with Arabella

FiremanKing · 19/04/2019 10:24

Constance/Connie would also go with Arabella.

FiremanKing · 19/04/2019 10:25

Emmaline

FiremanKing · 19/04/2019 10:26

Theodore for a boy

FiremanKing · 19/04/2019 10:26

Hugo

I thought it was Ptolemy. I know an Arabella and her bro is called Jet. It kind of makes her name cooler to me. I think Ottilie and Rupert are a bit affected. Clara is nice.

RainbowMum11 · 19/04/2019 10:32

Tolemy is spelt Ptolemy.

I have an Arabella and a Constance.

Buenavista · 19/04/2019 10:33

Rupert James or Clara, definitely from your list, both would go beautifully with Arabella. Clara Ottilie?

IggyAce · 19/04/2019 10:37

Adelaide
Caspar

LittleMissMummaBear · 19/04/2019 11:43

For boys I think Everest is the nicest, how about Everett?
Ottilie is the imo, goes great with Arabella! x

BigSexyCrimeUnit · 19/04/2019 11:57

Rupert James - Like this one
Tolemy - no, and it's spelt wrongly
Everest - grim, sounds like double glazing

Thea - Far too popular, was everywhere a few years ago
Ottilie - Not keen, prefer Elodie which just sounds prettier
Elowen - Quite difficult to say.
Clara - Like Thea, was everywhere a few years ago
Savanna - Absolutely grim, usually spelt Savannah and one of those American south names

Emmeline
Charlotte also goes very well but has become quite popular now
Marianne

Overall, I love Elodie for a girl

I like your choice for a boy.

MargotSimpson · 19/04/2019 12:12

My favourite of those are Rupert and Ottilee. Someone suggested Isabelle, no! That’s far too similar to Arabella.

Tiramisu1 · 19/04/2019 12:15

I like Rupert and Clara.

How about

Quentin
Marcus

Martha
Cecily

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Yes I know Ptolemy is spelt like that. We would be spelling it correctly with the biblical spelling. I thought for the purpose of the thread it may be best spelt phonetically.
I think Isabelle is too close for Arabella. Arabella’s best friends are Rosabelle and Annabelle, so I think we want to stay clear of any more belles 🤣
Elodie was actually our first choice for Arabella for the majority of our pregnancy but I went off it at the last minute.
I’m glad everyone likes Rupert/ Rupert James. I think this is our boy choice.
Ottilie is 100% my favourite girl choice, but hated by DP. He wasn’t keen on Arabella either though so I might be able to bring him down.
Emmeline and Martha were choices for DD1 too... so you’ve definitely got my style down!
Thanks everyone, I think you’ve confirmed some of my own worries about some of the names.

Constance is lovely too, and I like Connie for short.

Martha is lovely

Flamingosnbears · 19/04/2019 15:36

If you like Ottilie and your other half not so much how about Ottoline?... That way you could have Ottilie as a nickname
For boys Rupert James is nice or how about Christopher?...

bridgetreilly · 19/04/2019 18:06

I thought for the purpose of the thread it may be best spelt phonetically.

Possibly the most condescending thing I've ever seen in Baby Names.

Enwi · 19/04/2019 19:46

I’m sorry you feel it was condescending @bridgetreilly but I’m sure a very quick scan through the baby names thread will display that there is often confusion over the pronounciation of more obscure names.
My meaning was actually that I was asking for opinions on the names themselves, not on particular spellings of them. I already know which spellings I would use if I chose these names. I wanted the names to be pronounced how I intended them to be. Everybody recognised the name I intended them to, so no harm done.

I like Christopher. It is a family name too. I quite like Christopher James as well.

FiremanKing · 19/04/2019 20:02

I‘ve always liked the names Christian and Elliot.

Bumblebeesmum · 19/04/2019 20:06

I’m not sure I believe you knew it was Ptolemy - wouldn’t you have mentioned you were spelling it phonetically for us to manage? Either way it’s horrific (to me as a random nobody on the Internet)

Rupert and Clara & are lovely although I think all the girls names are nice

Enwi · 19/04/2019 21:58

That’s OK that you don’t believe me- I can hardly persuade you otherwise. We did extensive research into all names that we considered for DD1, and it’s a name that I’ve only ever seen written down, so it would be difficult to misspell.

Clara is lovely.
What about Georgina?

Or Agnes?
Rupert is old fashioned but I like it. Traditional but different.
