Hi everyone,
So I love the name Adalia, have done for years and years. However I was looking for some opinions on whether or not to use it.

I'm not really interested in opinions due to taste/pronunciation etc., but only specifically regarding the fact that when you google 'Adalia', the front page is dominated by articles videos and photos about a girl called Adalia Rose who has Progeria syndrome which means she ages too quickly and among a lot of things, affects her appearance. She's become a viral internet joke/meme in the last few years, which obviously is horrid Sad.

I was just worried, what with the digital age kids are being born into these days, whether I'd be opening up my child to possibly a lot of bullying if I gave them this name? Specifically because of this being what they/classmates would likely see when googling the name. Nothing negative is meant towards the little girl mentioned above, who is obviously an inspiration - just in objective terms wondering if this should stop me using a name I love. It's not exactly a well-known name otherwise.

Thanks for any helpful comments received.

I like the name Adalia - I thought you were going to say it was a pornstar or something - a disabled child wouldn’t stop me although it’s somewhat unlikely to be the first thing that pops up in 15 years time

Wolfiefan · 15/04/2019 15:47

I would expect a lifetime of having to say no not Azalea.
I haven’t googled my name so no idea what comes up!!

EleanorOalike · 15/04/2019 15:48

Is it pronounced Adahhhlia or Adayyylia?

The disabled child connection wouldn’t put me off.

LittleMissMummaBear · 15/04/2019 15:50

Adalia is a lovely name! I didn’t know who this Adalia Rose is, but she sounds like a very strong girl- its not a bad connection. I wouldn’t worry about it, good luck x

Thanks everyone xx

I agree she does seem a strong, bubbly girl from what I've seen/read. Was just worried about kids being mean, associating her appearance with my old child, you know the sort of things some kids do...!
And true, by the time I have a teenager I'm sure things would have moved on anyway. I guess no one can know what associations a name will have in a few years time - anything can happen.

@EleanorOalike - I would use a-DAY-le-ah, personally.

The connection wouldn't put me off but if I saw it written down I wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce it, and if you said it out loud I wouldn't have a clue how to spell it. That could get quite wearing for her as she gets older.

jumpingjack123 · 15/04/2019 16:22

Well as I said that doesn't really concern me anyway, and that's coming from someone who already has a name hard to pronounce if you see it/spell if you hear it - I've survived well enough. Was the specific point I mentioned that was my only concern, so if people think it's a non-issue then that's great Smile

Adalia Bipunctata

jumpingjack123 · 15/04/2019 18:04

@platypusLeague - Yep I know about the ladybird, and I quite like that association 😊

I'm afraid to me it sounds like you're saying "a dahlia"

Jaz32 · 15/04/2019 18:50

Never heard this name before or the girl you mention but if you love the name do not let that put you off. The ladybird thing is sweet so that shouldn't put you off either, it's not like it's a venomous spider/snake 😂
I'd pronounce it A-Dahl-e-a
