Rosaline or Elizabeth?

We’re having a bit of trouble deciding between these 2. Would actually be between three as we’re unsure on whether to go for the Elisabeth or Elizabeth spelling. Have a four year old Margot if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Rosaline seems made up and sounds like an ointment.
Go for the Elizabeth spelling unless you are from or in a country where it is normally spelt with an s.

Rosalind is lovely.

LittleMissMummaBear · 15/04/2019 13:40

Oh I adore the name Margot! great choice!
I like Elizabeth (spelt with a z) because of all the great nn possibilities, (Lizzie, Ellie, Betsy, Betty, Liza...) I would doubt she will go by Elizabeth when she is older, this may be something to think about?
Rosaline is nice but would create so many pronunciation problems.
How about Rosalie? Rosalie is such a gorgeous name; Margot and Rosalie is great too. I much prefer it to Rosaline or Elizabeth. xx

Nnnnnineteen · 15/04/2019 14:54

I like Elizabeth, although the very loud performance parenting by a woman in Waitrose last week with a toddler called Lilibet would urge me to advise against that as a nn!

Frogbull · 15/04/2019 14:58

Elizabeth. How is Rosaline pronounced?

Peachbubble · 15/04/2019 15:48

I prefer Rosaline of the two, but like Rosalie better.

Luciaia · 15/04/2019 16:58

I love Rosalie but dh doesn’t- insists it sounds incomplete
Rosaline would be pronounced Roz-a-line (with the I like eye)

Rosalind

LittleMissMummaBear · 15/04/2019 17:09

Such a shame your dh doesn’t like Rosalie, it would have been great. Ask him again in a week or so, he’ll probably forget and rethink lol! x

PlatypusLeague · 15/04/2019 17:09

Spellchecker changed my post! I was going to say Rosaline.

Luciaia · 15/04/2019 18:04

Ah it’s so hard- I think I prefer the nn Rosie to the Elizabeth nns although I don’t dislike any of those but may prefer Elizabeth to Rosaline. Will probably change my mind a million times by tomorrow though

I think Elizabeth is the best girls name ever and so versatile.
Being Romany though anything Rosie related is traditional, so I like this too.

evilharpy · 15/04/2019 18:10

In Ireland, Rosaleen is a common name for ladies of a certain age (same sort of generation as when names like Eileen were popular). It's pronounced to rhyme with cream though, unlike you describe above. I would think that people would assume Rosaline was pronounced like this.

Do you like Rosemary?

Luciaia · 15/04/2019 18:14

evilharpy I knew Rosaline could be pronounced that way as well just assumed the eye rhyming pronounciation was more common, not sure why. Maybe because that’s how Leonardo DiCaprio says it in Romeo and Juliet Blush

And no not a fan of rosemary

I think lots of people will pronounce Rosaline ‘wrong’ according to your wishes and you’ll end up correcting constantly.
Agree that Rosalie is better. Elizabeth is lovely, so if you both like it, think this is the better option.

bridgetreilly · 15/04/2019 18:45

I think Rosalind is better than Rosaline, but I may be biased. I would pronounce it Ros-a-line not Ros-a-leen.

Elizabeth is fine but a bit boring. Choose Rosalind!

Aimily · 15/04/2019 18:48

I love Rosaline, it's much more unique than Elizabeth, although Elsbeth is pretty too.

DramaAlpaca · 15/04/2019 20:34

I like Rosaline, it's unusual & pretty.

RomanyQueen1 · 15/04/2019 20:54

With Elizabeth though you have a pick of so many versions. is there another girls name that does this? Not a reason to choose this one though.

CloserIAm2Fine · 15/04/2019 20:57

Elizabeth is my all time favourite name so 100% Elizabeth for me!

YemenRoadYemen · 15/04/2019 21:31

I'd pronounce it Roz-a-leen.

Definitely prefer Rosalind.

Luciaia · 15/04/2019 21:55

Just to throw another one into the mix- Evangeline. Had scrapped it off my list but just came back to me. I think Rosaline is front runner at the moment though

Rosaline is lovely (I would also pronounce it Rosaleen but as per poster above could be an Irish thing, MIL's name)

Marcipex · 16/04/2019 07:08

I love Elizabeth/Elisabeth, maybe with an s has the edge, but both beautiful.

I do like Rosaline, but I wouldn't know if it was line or leen.

If it matters to you, I know many Evangeline s. So many parents of the Evies had the same original idea to use it instead of Evelyn. It's a pretty name but sooo popular.

MercyBodle · 16/04/2019 07:39

There's a Rosaline in Shakespeare's Love's Labours Lost and a mention I think in Romeo and Juliet. I'm not personally a fan of the fussy Rose names (I think Rosalie is the worst) as they seem to me to only suit a small number of people. I'm influenced by knowing an adult Rosalie who hated her name and eventually changed it. I love Rose and Rosie though.

Elisabeth/Elizabeth is beautiful and has such strength and a range of possible short forms, so that would be my choice. Either spelling is fine - which one looks good to you?

NutMeghan · 16/04/2019 14:23

Elizabeth

But I like Rosa and Rosamund more.
