Alfred/Freddie

FTM due in a few weeks. We are team yellow, have a girls name sorted which we both love but all of the boys names that we like are popular (think traditional names like Oliver, Henry etc). Was thinking Elian until I saw on here that some people think it sounds like Alien (can't unhear it now).

Anyway, according to the names registered so far this year, Alfred/Freddie do not appear in the top 50 boys names for 2019 which I was surprised at. Being a FTM, I was hoping other mums to young children could tell me if there are loads of toddlers/newborns called Freddie.

Always keen to hear other ideas too, nothing too 'out there' but I don't want DS (if that's was we have) being 1 of 4 boys with the same name in class.

Thanks

I guess I should ask about Alfie too as we probably would go for Alfred so either Freddie/Alfie are the likely nn's

I don’t think you’re looking at the official data. The most recent name data from 2017 has Freddie at number 16: names.darkgreener.com/#freddie

It’s my perception that it’s pretty popular. I know quite a few under the age of six.

MissSmith80 · 09/04/2019 08:41

It is the official data for births registered from Jan - March 2019 so very recent - I know it was a popular name a couple of years ago, was hoping it was on its way down the list so wouldn't be as common amongst LO's nursery/school buddies

Official birth statistics including names are only published over a year later!

BlueMerchant · 09/04/2019 08:52

My two are older but on the school run I hear lots of different mum's in the 2yr olds/nursery area shouting Alfie.
I also know of a baby Alfie.

In England and Wales he official data on baby names is the data collected and collated by the Office of National Statistics, and usually published in tye second half of the following year. The most recent dataset on the ONS website is 2017. boys names2017

IME Freddie is very popular with U5s , and can be derived from Alfred, Wilfred and Frederick.

ThanksItHasPockets · 09/04/2019 09:01

Would you mind sharing a link, OP?

The ONS does not keep a running tally of births throughout the year. Assuming that you are in England and Wales I’m afraid it isn’t possible that what you are looking at is official data.

I think Alfie and Freddie are both in the top 20. Alfred is just outside the top 100 but rising.

Twisique · 09/04/2019 09:22

Don't know any Alfreds, couple of Freddie's, no Alfies, several Arthurs and lots of Teddies Grin

MyGastIsFlabbered · 09/04/2019 09:23

I'm biased because I've got a Freddie. He's officially a Frederick but hates his full name and is always Freddie or Fred. I named him after my grandfather and didn't give a hoot whether it was popular or not. He's 9 now and I think the only Freddie in his year.

ParisWilton · 09/04/2019 09:25

Yes where have you obtained these stats from? Sites like Bounty and Nameberry base their statistics on the number of searches for a particular name rather than what has actually been registered in the UK

ParisWilton · 09/04/2019 09:26

To answer your question, I know one Alfred under 4

WrenNatsworthy · 09/04/2019 09:26

My Alfred is named after my Grandad. We call him Alfie or Alf.
He's 11. There are squillions of Alfies at his school.

sleepstealer · 09/04/2019 09:29

I know one Alfie under 3, not short for anything. Don't know anyone called Freddie.

Tiramisu1 · 09/04/2019 09:53

I know loads of little Alfies. I feel these cutesy names may start to fall out of fashion and start to sound dated soon.
