Narrowed down short list for dd2

Hi all,

I've managed to narrow down my short list to 3 names (I think for now! Haha) but can't decide which I like best or what combo.
Florence, Harriet and Adelyn.

Florence - I recently found out this was my dh great nan's middle name which shot it up the list for me. I really like the name wren however my dh doesn't like it as a full name so would have this option as a nn. We would likely pair it with the mn Alexandra (after bil) or Evelyn (a name we love but can't use for a number of reasons) or Lucille (a blues connection). My dd1 only likes the name Polly and I think that this would work as a sweet pet name for Florence.

Harriet - I know not to some taste but I love the nn Harry. My husband is a big blues fan and it gives a nod to a famous women blues artist Etta James. We would consider giving her two mn if we went with Harriet - Alexandra Lucille as our sir name starts with L making the itials Hall which is a family name. This does make for a long name though and don't know how I feel about that. Otherwise we would just use Alexandra or Florence as I want to include a family name.

Adelyn - we would use this spelling opposed to Adeline as my mum has a Lyn ending name and would be a slight nod to her. Adelyn was high on my list with dd1 and is our compromise for not being able to use Evelyn. We would pair it with the mn Florence.

I think I'm leaning towards Florence Alexandra or Florence Lucille but would love to hear opinions from others in case I'm missing something.

I really like both Florence and Harriet, and my favourite is Harriet. Harriet Alexandra or Harriet Alexandra Lucille would be lovely. I do like the idea of pet name Polly for Florence too.

I'm not a fan of Adelyn. I thought Adeline was pronounced differently - line to rhyme with mine. Are you in the US - where I guess they might both be pronounced 'lyn'? 'Ad' beginning names are extremely popular in the US - if you add up all the Addison, Adeline, Adelyn names of many different spellings.

Icantthinkofasinglenamehelp · 08/04/2019 03:33

I'd go for Florence or Harriet because I don't like Adelyn (this spelling) - I think the pronunciation Adeline (ending like Caroline) is really nice but I think the 'Lyn' sound is maybe a bit dated?

My favourites are Florence Evelyn or Harriet Alexandra. Harriet is less common which I like. Florence is really common now and I don't really like the sound of the full name but I love the NN Flo and Polly is cute too x

Florence is my favourite, and it sounds like you’ve got a ton of good reasons to use it.

I like all your middle names but Lucille is especially great, and Florence Lucille sounds fab!

Bellaposey · 08/04/2019 06:54

Another vote for either Florence or Harriet. I don't like the spelling of Adelyn and it would make the pronunciation Ade-lin rather than Ade-line (which is much nicer).

I'd go for Harriet Florence Smile

Eustasiavye · 08/04/2019 07:38

You say your dh doesn't like Florence so you can't ha e that.
I'd go for Harriet as you both like it.

Mummatogirls · 08/04/2019 07:49

Thanks everyone for your replies. Florence and Harriet are my top two with Adelyn that I keep coming back to. I'm in Australia and Adelyn is not uncommon and I actually prefer the ad-uh-lin pronouncation. But I'm not 100% sold on it so thanks for the feedback :)

@Eustasiavye sorry I may have not been clear with my dh liking Florence. We both had Florence on our lists and it's one of his favourites. I really liked the name wren and he didn't so I took it off my list. I floated the idea of using Ren as a nn for Florence and he didn't mind it, just didn't want it as a stand alone name if that makes sense?

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 08/04/2019 07:53

Not that keen on Adelyn/-line - I think it's in the Evelyn vein and having a moment of popularity that will probably end soonish.

Florence and Harriet are both lovely, and contrast really well. I think Florence edges it for me. Why not Florence Harriet?

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 08/04/2019 07:54

(Have to say I think 'Ren' is a bit of a stretch as a shortening for Florence, though. She will end up as Flo, if you're OK with that)

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 08/04/2019 07:56

(Missed your middle names post. Harriet Alexandra Lucille is a splendid name, but the initials thing a bit gimmicky, tbh - how about Harriet Alexandra Florence? Love Alexandra, so strong and striking)

RaffertyFair · 08/04/2019 08:01

Florence sounds a good choice as you both really line it. I thinks it's a great name.
Your nicknames sound odd to me though - Ren or Polly. But I'm of the school of thought that think nicknames evolve.

RaffertyFair · 08/04/2019 08:04

Both your suggested middle names sound lovely too Smile My preference would be Alexandra but Lucille works too.

BergamotMouse · 08/04/2019 09:12

Love Harriet with the nn Hattie.

mistermagpie · 08/04/2019 09:27

I quite like Adeline (ending like Caroline) but Adelyn (ending like litter bin) is not very nice.

Florence is a the nicest. In some accents people miss the t sound of the end of Harriet and that would irritate me.

PlatypusLeague · 08/04/2019 09:45

Florence Alexandra

ThanksItHasPockets · 08/04/2019 10:29

I absolutely love Florence.

It’s lovely to honour family members through names but I think giving your DD a name with the same suffix as your mum as a ‘nod’ is a bit tenuous.

ifthewallscouldtalk · 08/04/2019 21:30

Florence is pretty but quite popular and I think will date your child to being born at a certain time. I think wren as a nn for Florence is a bit of a stretch.

Adelyn does seem clunky with that spelling and even tho you have a good reason for it seems a bit yoouuuneeek. I feel like it would be a poor second to the name Evelyn that you want but can't have.

Harriet nn Harry is perfect. It's classy. It has a great reference to Etta James. It's not too popular right now. I love a unisex nn. Harriet Florence is ok but I absolutely love Harriet Alexandra Lucille. Such a strong beautiful name!

ifthewallscouldtalk · 08/04/2019 21:32

Ooh also agree with op who suggested Harriet Alexandra Florence. Actually that's the best option. Avoids the initials and also gets your nan in there. WINNER

NotQuiteSlimJim · 08/04/2019 21:32

I know a very sweet Adelyn, spelt your way.

ifthewallscouldtalk · 08/04/2019 21:32

Pp* not op!

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/04/2019 14:04

If i had a third dd she would be Florence so I'd go with that. I also really like Harriet though prefer Hattie as the nn. Not a fan of Adelyn though love Adelaide

Icklepup · 12/04/2019 14:25

Harriet

SumAndSubstance · 12/04/2019 14:31

Harriet is my favourite. I'm not sure how many people are going to pick up on all this tenuous nodding though!

NutMeghan · 12/04/2019 22:17

I don't like any of them but I think your reasons for Florence are the most convincing. And I like Polly.

PoppingGlitter · 13/04/2019 05:45

Harriet is my DD's name, loved it since I was a kid so obviously I am biased, her nickname is Hattie.

I am not a fan of Florence though, its seems a bit faddy and I went to school with one who was a rude cow

Adelyn is nice.

Ellenborough · 13/04/2019 05:47

I don’t like Adeline at all and adapting it to Adelyn is even worse.
