Little sister to Madeleine due imminently and we can’t decide between

Alice - worried overused?
Sophia - as above?
Lyra -too unusual? But we keep coming back to it.
Ottilie or Matilda - known as Tilly but like the shortening more than the full name?
Hermione - to be shortened to mimi

Clearly a literary thing going on!

Thanks.

Must be a London thing as there were at least 5 Alices in my DD class at school and my DS girlfriend is an Alice ..... good luck with your decision there all nice names

TatianaLarina · 04/04/2019 19:51

I know so many Alices of all ages.

beanhunter · 04/04/2019 19:57

Alice must have regional variation.
I certainly know a good few - ditto sophie/Sophia.
I think Lyra probably front runner followed by some combination/order of the others.

Lyra

Bellaposey · 04/04/2019 22:00

Love all the names on your list! I would vote for Alice or Lyra. Sophie is a bit popular, Ottilie I love but I think it's really of the moment and will date horribly in a few years, Matilda I'd avoid for being same initial as Madeline.

Congrats OP!

MollyHuaCha · 04/04/2019 23:54

Ottilie

KingHenrysCodpiece · 04/04/2019 23:59

aweedropofsancerre

I'm almost in centre of London so you must be onto something. Tons of Alices.

MsMustDoBetter · 05/04/2019 00:24

I love Alice and Hermione.

BellMcEnd · 05/04/2019 06:04

I’m in the Sarf East and only know one Alice (who loves in Southport)! She’s 7. I don’t think there’s a single one at our school.

Alice is a great name, I am also considering it, I don't think it can be overused as it's a classic!

Matilda might be a bit too similar to Madeleine. Not a fan of Ottilie myself as it sounds like utterly, as another poster has mentioned.

Lyra is unusual but don't let that stop you if you want to choose it! Hermione, Alice and Sophia are my faves.

BlueMerchant · 05/04/2019 13:47

Love Alice
Like Sophia
Like Hermione
Not keen on Matilda but do like Tilly
Don't like Lyra.

CrazyOldBagLady · 05/04/2019 13:47

I like Alice and Lyra best.

beanhunter · 05/04/2019 14:13

Husband has officially vetoed hermione today (which I’m surprisingly sad about) and big girl wants different initials.
So I think it’s probably an Alice vs Lyra debate now.

Alice gets my vote- lovely classic timeless name & think the nn Ally is cute. Not going to be uncommon but not insanely common imo either.

Meshpregnancy · 05/04/2019 16:41

I love all of them except Lyra which is dislike quite strongly.

I think Lyra is a flash in the on name that will date horribly having emerged from nowhere and become quite popular in last few years. I know three under five. Also the actual sound is quiet similar to liar and Lycra.

Alice is lovely. As is Ottilie. I love Hermoine but I see your husband has vetoed.

Lahlahfizzyfizzydoda · 05/04/2019 16:51

Lyra!

CloudPop · 05/04/2019 16:53

I slightly regret not calling my daughter Alice. Beautiful name.

mrsm43s · 05/04/2019 16:54

Alice was 17th most popular name in 2017, so pretty popular. I know loads, mainly 10 and under in the South East. Maybe it is a London and SE bubble. Its popularity would put me off.

Sophia - ranked 11th most popular in 2017, so more popular still

Lyra -ranked 183, so quite unique. I quite like it, its a bit different.

Ottilie - ranked 226, but on a massive upwards swing. I quite like it, but it does have a bit of an aspirational vibe to it to me.

Matilda known as Tilly - ranked 27. Personally I'm not keen on the Tilly shortening, but its a solid middle of the road name. Leaves me a bit cold.

Hermione - to be shortened to mimi - Ranked 511, but very recognisable still as a HP name. Love Mimi nickname, though.

I think I would choose Lyra or Mimi (Hermione) from your choices personally

Littleloafofbread · 05/04/2019 17:27

Alice

AvonCallingBarksdale · 05/04/2019 17:30

I have an Alice and she’s the only one in her year (secondary, Home Counties). It’s a brilliant name IMVHO Grin

ritzbiscuits · 05/04/2019 17:32

My friend has a Lyra. I really like it but I bet you'll spend a lot of time correcting people from assuming it's Lila et
