For a boy? Thoughts? And if you don’t hate it - ideas on a middle name with a single syllable surname beginning with R!

I don't like it, but then I'm not keen on Harrison, Tyler, Cooper or Mason either

How does it flow with your surname?

Absolutely fine as a middle name though IMO

TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood · 03/04/2019 19:14

I know a little Miller it's a lovely name and I've honestly no idea who people are being so bloody rude - ok if you don't like it but no need for such comments as 'its horrible' and 'awful name' fgs! Hmm especially as it actually IS used as a forename and such comments are hurtful. Manners and consideration, people!!

How about
Miller Ray
Miller Joe
Miller Jay
Miller Dean

Ignore the douche bags op! Grin

SilverySurfer · 03/04/2019 19:17

There are so many great names why would you name a child Miller?

Yogagirl123 · 03/04/2019 19:20

Pets name, not for an adorable baby.

TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood · 03/04/2019 19:20

...aaaaand there's another one 🙄

I bet all you guys are the same type of people who look at other people's good that they are about to easy and go "euurgh you're not going to eat that are you?! It looks disgusting!"... Grin

So rude.

TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood · 03/04/2019 19:21

food and eat 😂😂

myusernameisnotmyusername · 03/04/2019 19:21

I don't like it but I had an annoying boyfriend when I was 14 with the surname Miller which everyone used for his name so it just reminds me of that.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 03/04/2019 19:25

TheseThings - the OP has asked for people's opinions

Agree it is always rude to offer unsolicited opinions on name choices but the OP has asked what people think!

PCohle · 03/04/2019 19:26

It's not to my taste. Those surname type names always come across very American to me.

The OP has specifically asked for people's thoughts on the name, it's hardly akin to offering unasked for commentary on someone's food. Not least because OP isn't committed to the name at this point.

stepup123 · 03/04/2019 19:27

I think it's awful - sorry op

lottiegarbanzo · 03/04/2019 19:35

Windy

Mills / Millie / Mila are the obvious nicknames. Are they what you want?

Max Miller 'the cheeky chappie' was a famous comedian and Miller Max sounds like Miramax, so I'm not taken with that suggestion.

GivemeGinandTonic · 03/04/2019 19:35

The thing is names are a preference and choice just like anything else. You want to choose something YOU like. Everyone’s opinions are different on things like outfit choices, decor, cars, literally everything. We all have very different tastes in things and it would be boring if everyone was the same. One thing I can garauntee though is that when he’s here and you say his name, if it is Miller, it would be extremely rare to get any negative opinions about it.

TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood · 03/04/2019 19:42

shagged yes she did and fair enough to say if you like it or don't like it but why be quite so condemning when there actually are a fair few out there with this name who could be quite upset by such scathing opinions? It's just uncalled for. It's actually Not an awful name, it's just not to everybody's taste but that's fine if we all had the same taste All our kids would be called John and Claire or similar.

It's like when people ask for opinions on an outfit they're considering buying that doesn't suit them or whatever - most considerate people would at least try to soften the blow by saying 'it's not really you' or 'it's not the right length' or whatever not 'its bloody awful!' as the fact they've chosen it meant they at least didn't think so!

I'm waffling bit you get the gist Grin

Dwellington · 03/04/2019 20:13

Thanks all for feedback so far!

Yes I know it’s quite out there in the surname/occupation trend which a lot aren’t a fan of anyway. And good points raised about how it’s never going to be possible to get a consensus on a name as everyone has such varying tastes! It’s just interesting to get a ballpark idea of how many people you’d be likely to see recoil in horror when you introduce the new arrival and I’m fairly satisfied with what seems to be a fairly 50/50 split so far that it’s not entirely outside of the realms of being a useable name alongside the Hunters, Thatchers and Carters.

From the practical side of things the posters who raised the point about the surname starting with R - oddly I’ve practiced saying it aloud and it seems to sound fine. Whereas other ‘er’ ending names (such as Thatcher and Spencer) do seem to run into it a bit. Maybe it’s the ‘ill’ sound? I don’t know. I think unless you said it very quickly it wouldn’t an issue. But would be looking for either a one syllable punchy middle name, or maybe even a long 3 syllable such as Alexander (as surname is only single syllable).

I don't love it but if you do, use it.
People don't love one of my DS names either. (Although it is neither a surname nor an occupation, my parents detest it still)
It's just a name. And it's not Satan or Donald. If it makes your heart happy, do it!

rosyedith · 04/04/2019 21:55

@TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood
Agreed!

Op I love it! Go for it. I know a baby boy and baby girl with the name, suits both. Ignore the unwanted comments x

RoseMartha · 04/04/2019 23:00

As a middle name yes as a first name no.

stellarfox · 04/04/2019 23:11

Not keen on the occupational name trend but obviously some are or it wouldn’t be a trend. I would prefer Mason to Miller as it’s more established as a first name

ReginaPhalange89 · 05/04/2019 07:36

I actually really like it , friends of ours have a toddler called Millar . I'd never heard it as a first name before then and it's grown on me. Make sure it goes with your surname though!

lottiegarbanzo · 05/04/2019 10:00

I think that because most English people don't pronounce 'R's in the way that Scots and Americans do, all these occupational surnames ending in -er and -or don't work in the same way here.

Miller will sound the same as Milla i.e. shortened version of Camilla.

yellodays · 05/04/2019 19:49

Miller was my first choice for my DS! I love it but my other half said no as rightly so it didn't go with the surname.

I think it sounds great when pronounced properly, but I did worry people would say 'Mill-ah'. But if you love it then go for it! I think it's lovely.

yellodays · 05/04/2019 19:51

My DS also has Alexander as a middle name so we have similar taste haha!

NutMeghan · 05/04/2019 22:17

I really don't like it as I like lots of surname names.

Firstly I would assume girl as there are so many Milas, Millas etc and even some of the Milas are pronounced Miller.

Secondly I don't even like it as a girls name. I would prefer other similar names for girls like Harper and Piper over Miller/Milla/Mila, something about Miller is just annoying and I think it's all the variations and the mispronciation of Mila as Miller.

NutMeghan · 05/04/2019 22:19

Someone suggested Harris on another thread. How about that? Surname, 2 syllables, has double consonants in the middle and the letter i.

Jc2019 · 06/03/2021 14:00

I named my little boy Miller I love it his name is
Miller George
