Ellie Telly

I really love the name Eleanor but hate Ellie, and our surname is something like Telliman. I'm worried that I can't control the shortening (prefer Lena, Nora?) and that people will call her Ellie Telly or something like that. I don't really like Elena or Elinor.

Is it unusable?

Grin sorry OP but nobody is going to pass up the chance to call her Ellie Telli

Julia Gulia? Watch the scene from The Wedding Singer.

It's a risk, but then I know someone who was called 'Smelly Ellie' all through school and she didn't have a rhyming nickname, so there's no saying what kids will pick on.
How do you feel about a similar name like Leonora or Leonie?

Ihuntmonsters · 03/04/2019 07:50

I don't think that Ellie Telly is inevitable or really that bad. By the time your dd goes to school you/ she will probably have decided on the diminutive you like best (if you want to use one) and then she can go as Eleanor known as Lena / Nora and Ellie may not be in the picture (although she might get Bloody Nora instead).

I think you have to distinguish between an actual shortened form of the name which gets used on a daily basis by everyone. Which, if you always call her Lena or Nora or whatever, you can control at least until she's old enough to make her own choice.

And the other nicknames and affectionate and silly names which you can't control at all, no matter what her name is. Ellie Telly (which is actually quite fun) is one of those.

I love Eleanor but hate Ellie too.
I’d still use it though

ifthewallscouldtalk · 03/04/2019 17:04

Ok thanks all. Seems to be a split opinion Confused I suppose you're right in that if a kid is going to get picked on people will find something whether or not it's obvious. I'd definitely insist on another shortening at home to try to dissuade people though.

Ohh yes, I suspect that might happen when she gets older. I too prefer Nora. if you introduce her as Nora and call her Nora around people, she won't get Ellie (and if she does, she'll tell em off)! x

mummymonica · 03/04/2019 18:29

Very high risk that people will call her Ellie.. if you don't like this you could tell people not to shorten it or if you start shortening it to something different people will follow (like ell for example)

Jaz32 · 03/04/2019 19:32

My friend Eleanor was always Elle pronounced just "L" and I know of others who go by Ella not Ellie x

BlueMerchant · 03/04/2019 19:35

I wouldn't use Eleanor. I think Ellie Telly is a risk!

paperandfireworks · 03/04/2019 21:40

Locally, Eleanor is pronounced Elle-ner rather than Ell-A-NOR, which is great for Smellner / smeleanor.

paperandfireworks · 03/04/2019 21:41

More helpfully, I don't know any Eleanors who use Ellie or Ellies who are really Eleanor.
