How would you pronounce it? Would you pronounce it differently for a boy or a girl?

OP posts:

GreatDuckCookery · 02/04/2019 17:42

I wouldn’t OP. Maybe a middle name?

mclaleli · 02/04/2019 17:46

Same as David Bowie

Even David didn't know half the time! There is footage of him saying 'bow (low) ie' and 'bow (now) ie'

It's not really a first name for a person though, is it?

Littlepond · 02/04/2019 17:47

Sounds like someone saying Barry with a speech impediment

Jessi88 · 02/04/2019 18:32

Bow (like bow tie) - Ee.

We’d use it as a middle name if we ever have a boy but I’m not brave enough to use it as a first. DH is a huge Bowie fan and when he first suggested it, I wasn’t 100% convinced but it’s grown on me a lot and I love it in our potential full name combo.

percheron67 · 02/04/2019 18:50

I cannot believe that anyone would call their child after a knife!?

mummymonica · 02/04/2019 19:23

I read it BOW-EE , as in a bow you wear in your hair with an ee sound on the end

DramaAlpaca · 02/04/2019 21:47

For a girl? Just no.

I don't like it for a boy either, but never mind that. In answer to your question I think the first syllable should rhyme with toe, low & so.

MigThePig · 02/04/2019 21:55

@Littlepond Grin

frankiefirstyear · 02/04/2019 22:23

Take a BOW -ie (Also deck the halls with BOUGHs of holly)

But the child will probably also get called

Little BO peep BO wie

IVflytrap · 02/04/2019 22:35

Much prefer Bowie over Bowie. Whereas Bowie is frankly ridiculous.

CountFosco · 02/04/2019 22:37

Jones

Singlenotsingle · 02/04/2019 22:40

I pronounce it DAVID. His surname wasn't Bowie - it was Jones. Even his own son Zowie, renamed himself Duncan Jones!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/04/2019 22:43

Years ago I knew someone who named their baby Ziggy. He'd be about 12 now. I always wondered if he was named in honour of Ziggy Stardust

GoFiguire · 02/04/2019 22:46

Bowie is pronounced B-ah-lonz.

Bumblebeesmum · 02/04/2019 22:49

Awful name - sounds like a sort of cutsie dog name
But I’m very unfashionable in many ways

mclaleli · 02/04/2019 23:00

Even his own son Zowie, renamed himself Duncan Jones!

Duncan didn't rename himself - he was Duncan from birth.

FamilyOfAliens · 02/04/2019 23:03

Please tell us you’re not thinking of it for an actual name for an actual child, OP.

feelingverylazytoday · 02/04/2019 23:37

You could always ask Angie Bowie, OP. She seems to be the only person who calls themselves that. I believe she's on twitter and facebook.

mummywingingit · 03/04/2019 02:28

I think it's lovely!! I liked this name but it didn't go with our surname. My son has an unusual name too that people ask us to pronounce, and it's not a problem.
Call your child what you like love

mummywingingit · 03/04/2019 02:35

Oh and I would pronounce it as Bow-e (hair bow)
People ask us all the time how to pronounce our surname as can be said in two different ways like this name, we tell them and they soon get the hang of it 😂

Fridasrage · 03/04/2019 02:57

Like to tie a bow!

I think it's cute and bold but some of these comments... lol.

Tavannach · 03/04/2019 03:11

David Bowie pronounced it like tie a bow.

I've also seen him interviewed, by Jeremy Pacman I think, where they discussed the different pronunciations and he still said it like tie a bow Bowie.

Trekkingbeyond · 03/04/2019 07:04

mummywingingit I wonder how your son feels about continually having to correct people's pronounciation of his name Hmm

mclaleli · 03/04/2019 08:02

David Bowie pronounced it both ways, several times.

helpmum2003 · 03/04/2019 08:11

Middle name would be safer...
