It’s lovely when pronounced correctly, most will pronounce it ‘Terry’ thoughSad

BertrandRussell · 30/03/2019 00:40

Are you French?

Nonstopnora · 30/03/2019 00:42

No just think it’s a really pretty name

SilverySurfer · 30/03/2019 01:47

Lovely, if you are French.

FissionChips · 30/03/2019 01:59

Whats wrong with a person using a name from a different country?

MercyBodle · 30/03/2019 02:10

It's okay. And I don't see a problem with using a name from another country.

NuffSaidSam · 30/03/2019 02:17

I think it's nice, but only if you're French.

Nothing wrong with using a name from another language, but not when the pronunciation is too difficult in English.

I don't think Thierry will be pronounced properly.

DramaAlpaca · 30/03/2019 02:30

Only if you are French & can say it properly.

Argeles · 30/03/2019 07:29

It’s gorgeous.

I don’t know why some people seem to think one has to be French to have a French name.

Nonstopnora · 30/03/2019 09:24

I think it’s very easy to say and is also a lovely name. Thanks everyone

Of course you don’t have to be from a certain country to use a name from their language! Otherwise nobody would be called Isabel, Louis, Maria, Penelope etc Hmm

Most people will know how to pronounce it because of the footballer.
Go for it OP, it’s different!

BertrandRussell · 30/03/2019 09:30

“I don’t know why some people seem to think one has to be French to have a French name.”
You don’t. But having a French name when you’re not French and don’t live in a French speaking country will be a pain in the neck. People will get it wrong all the time.

BlueMerchant · 30/03/2019 09:32

No. Not unless I was french. I would sound and look odd and as an adult would be forever asked about his French heritage!

BertrandRussell · 30/03/2019 09:32

And people will ask him why he’s called it all the time and think they are the first person to say “Dad a football fan, then?”

TheRedFox · 30/03/2019 09:35

I think it might also depend on the surname.

If you have a surname that sounds very obviously English (Thierry Jones for eg) it may not flow very well.

Good luck!

ElizabethMainwaring · 30/03/2019 09:35

Yes it's lovely. The only real life one I've heard of was my lecturers son, who would now be about 10. I'm a teacher, so obviously come across lots of names. Go for it.

jiggsymalone · 30/03/2019 10:25

Lovely if you are French, I would think it was pretentious if you are not.

FissionChips · 30/03/2019 11:30

You don’t. But having a French name when you’re not French and don’t live in a French speaking country will be a pain in the neck. People will get it wrong all the time

When people ask about my name I simply say “Oh, my parents just really liked the name” and then the usual response I receive is “Well, it is such a lovely name”. End of discussion about it.

Really no issue at all.

NunoGoncalves · 31/03/2019 10:51

As alluded to above it's a name that in English is strongly associated with one person. So everyone will assume he's named after Thierry Henry.

NuffSaidSam · 31/03/2019 10:57

Thierry pronounced properly by a French person has soft/slightly rolled 'r' sound in the middle.

That's not a sound that 'r' makes in English, which means it will be constantly mispronounced, with a hard 'r' and then it's not nearly as nice. 'Tear-ree' just sounds like he cries a lot!!

Some names from other languages work, others don't. It's like calling an English baby Pierre. It's never going to be pronounced properly.

HouseplantInvasion · 31/03/2019 14:10

I don’t care that it’s French, but it’s not at all to my taste.

I would very much associate it with the footballer too.

pansydansy · 31/03/2019 14:14

What's wrong with it being associated with a footballer? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Op I like it. And have no problem with pronouncing it correctly.

cerealmixx · 31/03/2019 14:19

What's wrong with it being associated with a footballer

Nothing particularly wrongwith it, just with all names that are highly associated with one specific person, your child will inevitably spend their entire life being asked about it. Seems like something I'd avoid for my child. There are plenty of other names out there, after all!

Other examples include Elvis, Elton, Angelina, Channing, Barack, Oprah, etc.

Sybelline · 31/03/2019 14:44

Only if you're French. A bit odd if you're not.

And it just wouldn't be pronounced correctly. French names are a bit like sea anemones, they lose a lot of their beauty when taken from their natural environment.

Nonstopnora · 31/03/2019 16:11

Well I love it sooo 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks for everyone’s opinions
