Torben?

Hello!

Expecting dc2 in April and currently have 1 boys name on the list that dh loves - I like it but I'm only half sold. Tonight he suggested Torben. I wasn't sure at first but the more I say it the more I like it.

We like fairly uncommon names that can be shortened to more well known nicknames so the child has an option if they want a shortened/less unusual name. Our DDs name is like this and I guess in this case he would have the option of Toby or Ben?

What are your thoughts? Do you know any?

Sorry OP but I find it a very ugly name. Or it sounds pretentious

DennisSkinnersMolotov · 28/03/2019 14:45

I'd never heard it before but it's lovely. I like it a lot.

NancyFrank · 28/03/2019 19:42

I know two (age 2 and 4) and saw another thread about the name recently but I do like it

FizzyGreenWater · 31/03/2019 21:28

Yes I know one, he is Danish.

You could also consider Thorfinn, and have a Finn for short.

FizzyGreenWater · 31/03/2019 21:28

Like it by the way!

MamaDane · 31/03/2019 21:34

Dane here and yes it's Danish. Personally not keen on the name prefer Thorkild (h and d are silent), Thorbjørn (h is silent) and Torvald (d is silent).

3out · 31/03/2019 21:40

It makes me think ‘Jeremy’.

I like Torin. DD has a Torin in her class. Thorfinn is nice too, but a bit more popular perhaps.

ifthewallscouldtalk · 31/03/2019 21:46

It's good!

SleepingStandingUp · 01/04/2019 00:26

Thorkild I think the problem in English is its a little Thor killed....

Love Thorbjørn although I'd consider anglicising the spelling as one of those letters is not in imaginery DS's alphabet. Really want Torbien but DS vettoed.

newroundhere · 01/04/2019 00:41

I have a Torben - we weren't sure if we were brave enough to use an unusual name but I'm really pleased we did. DS is 2.5 now and we haven't found ourselves shortening it so far. It's easy to say and easy to spell, no one has said anything bad about it (although lots of people have asked if we have any Danish connection - we don't).

Wallflowerfire · 01/04/2019 00:45

In the Peak District there's lots of Tor references - Mam Tor is one of the main peaks so has lots of nice connotations around there.
I think it's nice and I think Tor is a cool nn.

MamaDane · 01/04/2019 08:41

@SleepingStandingUp I suppose you could just write it Thorbjorn. Wink Thorkild is pronounced Tor-keel though, so it doesn't sound like kill Grin

MrsEricBana · 01/04/2019 08:44

I like. I know a Tobin and that's good but Torben better I think.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/04/2019 16:40

@MamaDane like shaquille o'neal?

That is, of course, the problem with stealing names you can't pronounce lol

BlueMerchant · 01/04/2019 16:45

Really don't like it.

Gedge77 · 01/04/2019 20:57

I know a Torsten which I prefer.

Trinnidad · 01/04/2019 22:36

I know someone called Tobin, sometimes spelt Tobyn (pronounced like Toe-bin). I presumed it was a made up name but it's not! I don't know if it's related to Torbyn etc, but I think it sounds better without the r in the middle. You can also use Toby, Tobes, Ben etc as you like.

sunnysunchild · 01/04/2019 22:38

Sounds made up, but if you like it go for it

Smillassenseofsnow · 01/04/2019 22:40

Not a fan. The only Torben I know of is a middle-aged, slightly ugly character in a TV show. Far too ugly for the women he's involved with...

justforthis6473 · 01/04/2019 22:42

Not heard of it before. But bloody love it!

3boysandabump · 01/04/2019 22:45

Never heard of it before but I love it

Popskipiekin · 01/04/2019 22:48

Go for it. An adult Torben I know is a lovely chap. It’s unusual, yes, but it’s not a mile away from the many -en/an names for boys out there.

FamilyOfAliens · 01/04/2019 22:52

If you choose it, I can’t see how it could be shortened to Toby.

But if you like Toby, why not go for that?

TheLastPharl · 01/04/2019 23:18

I really like itSmile

SleepingStandingUp · 01/04/2019 23:34

If you choose it, I can’t see how it could be shortened to Toby

Torby is cute
