Adeline/Adalyn with this surname?

We are double barrelling mine and DPs surnames so baby's last name will be Smith-McCann.

We like Adeline or Adalyn for a girl but I'm not sure whether these names (or Adalyn in particular) would remind people of Madeleine McCann particular with the "McCann" element of the surname? So Adeline Smith-McCann or Adalyn Smith-McCann. Or am I totally overthinking this?

Any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks :)

I had the same problem when I wanted Madeline for my child a few years ago. My surname begins with “Mc” so would have the Madeline Mc.... the same. I didn’t use it as I felt it too similar, x

Possible suggestion is to double barrel her first name too. So her name would be Adaline-Grace (whatever your choice is) Smith-McCann meaning whenever her whole name is read out it doesn’t sound so similar. X

DramaAlpaca · 26/03/2019 20:21

MM was the first thing I thought of, sorry. I wouldn't.

aliceandkids77 · 26/03/2019 20:50

Ooh I just love the name Adeline! It’s so classy and gorgeous. deffo spelt Adeline tho, it is the original spelling and would save her a lot of trouble correcting people. Both are lovely tho. good choice OP! x

Jessabean · 26/03/2019 22:04

I don't think it's so similar that it should be a problem. Maybe I'm pronouncing it wrongly but I would say Adeline (agree with pp this is the nicer and proper spelling) as Ad-er-line Vs Madeleine as Mad-er-Lin and with the double barrell also takes away from it as well. You can also use nn to take away from it as well e.g Addy and as other poster said you could also double barrel first name if you were really worried though double barreled forenames and surnames is maybe a bit much of a mouthful!
Adeline is a lovely name though. Was on my list.

Tillygetsit · 26/03/2019 23:42

I'm sorry but I think it's far too close.

BartonHollow · 26/03/2019 23:51

Adeline/Adelaide would be on my name list if pregnant so I totally get that you love the name.

Is there no way the McCann parent would accept a Smith only surname does it HAVE to be double barrelled ?

It's a no go really, it will be commented on to both you and her, constantly.

You aren't alone with this - a remember a stepmum posting her frustration as she had always loved the name Jessica but her DSD was Holly.

It's very unfortunate for you, but might appear tasteless if you went ahead

BlackPrism · 27/03/2019 00:01

Even just McCann reminds me of MM so yes it does.

KathyS901 · 27/03/2019 03:06

I wouldn't Sad sorry OP

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 27/03/2019 10:04

Could you not drop McCann?

SosigDog · 27/03/2019 10:09

Do you also use a double barrelled name OP? I tried it for a few months and it was a total pain in the bum for writing on forms and spelling over the phone etc. I reverted to a single surname because it was such a pain.

SosigDog · 27/03/2019 10:11

And I would definitely not call a child Adeline Smith McCann! Bad associations, sorry. Especially if the school does what they often do and simplifies by only writing one surname on books and paintings etc.

Keener · 27/03/2019 10:19

That's ridiculous. McCann is a very common name, and even if the OP were proposing calling her daughter Madeleine, there are probably lots of others already out there, named in all innocence before a three year old went missing -- and she isn't.

Thanks for all replies. I did think it might be a bit close so I'm glad I posted this to hear what others think. Back to the drawing board I think!

@SosigDog I don't currently have a double barrelled name but am planning to once DP and I get married next year. My first name is a common lady's name beginning with K so I think you can guess why I'm reluctant to just take my DP's last name McCann!

I agree, too similar.

It's not "ridiculous" the consensus on this thread is that it's the first thing you think of on surname ALONE never mind a similar first name

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 27/03/2019 11:52

In this situation I would be considering making you all Smith's and losing your DH's name altogether. I certainly wouldn't be in a hurry to adopt a name which when paired with my first name made others instantly think of another person. It's a whole different kettle of fish to knowingly choosing the name against already having the name.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 27/03/2019 13:35

Definitely just all take your name OP! Adaline Smith is perfection!

Keener · 27/03/2019 19:37

But McCann is a very common name. Saying it reminds you of one missing child is like saying ‘ew’ because the surname Johnson reminds you of a blonde Tory fuckwit.
