Hello,
Just wondering a few things about this name:

  1. Would you consider Zara an English “classic” name?
  2. Some other threads I’ve read about this name have suggested the name is too posh. Whilst others have suggested it’s actually the complete opposite! How do you view Zara..?
  1. Out of this shortlist which do you prefer?

Zara
Lily
Maya
Lara

Thanks in advance

I love it & was on my list but I couldn't get past thinking of the shop every time I heard it. Probably because I spend a bit too much £ in there!

Sparkly124 · 21/03/2019 07:44

Sounds Spanish to me.

WilsonandNoodles · 21/03/2019 07:45

I quite like Zara and think it suits a lot of styles of names. If you asked me to list classic girls names I probably wouldn't include it but equally wouldn't if I was listing modern names either. It just sits nicely between the two as a less common but well known name.

imsorryiasked · 21/03/2019 07:56

I think it's a lovely name but wouldn't include it as a classic as its too uncommon.
Much nicer to be Zara than Sara Smile

foxsbiscuit · 21/03/2019 09:57

I love it I don't think it's a classic name but not chavvy either. from your list I also like Lara

daisypond · 21/03/2019 10:25

Not exactly classic but not posh or downmarket either. It’s a very old name, but not necessarily in the UK. I like it.

NuffSaidSam · 21/03/2019 10:28

I really like it.

I don't this it's too posh. Zara Tindall is probably the most well known Zara so maybe that's why people think it's posh?

Zara is my favourite from your list. I like Lara as well. Although it's a bit Tomb Raider.

heymammy · 21/03/2019 10:34

I have a Zara, I love it and I am not posh Grin

It is definitely making a comeback, there were no baby Zaras when mine was born...or so I thought...turns out 78 were registered in our city for that birth year!

chickensub · 21/03/2019 10:56

Not a fan personally, it sounds a bit harsh. I wouldn't call it classy or particularly posh.

WaterQuarter · 21/03/2019 11:30

It's not classic, it's modern. And it's kind of a classless name to me (good thing) as obviously there's Zara Phillips but it's not a name used exclusively by posh people, like Cressida for example.

I like it a lot and prefer it to the other names on your list.

WaterQuarter · 21/03/2019 11:32

^^ should specify by modern I mean it's usage in the UK is a fairly recent thing, not that the name has been recently made up Smile

chickensub · 21/03/2019 11:36

Sorry I meant to say classic not classy.

Jaz32 · 21/03/2019 15:02

Love Zara, my favourite of your list too!

Expressedways · 21/03/2019 15:05

I feel fairly neutral about the name, I don’t think it’s tied to a particular social class if that’s what you’re asking. However, the association with the shop would be too strong for me. If you’re not bothered then go for it though! I also like Lara from your list.

JingsMahBucket · 21/03/2019 15:39

I love the name Zara. I have a friend from high school whose name is Zahra and I loved it as soon as we met. It’s Arabic for “beautiful, bright, shining and brilliant” and she definitely is.

Whoops75 · 21/03/2019 15:40

I like it

BlueMerchant · 21/03/2019 15:45

Not quite a classic but classy all the same.
I like it. It's not 'posh' or lower class.
Zara
Lara
Maya-no
Lily-no.

DramaAlpaca · 21/03/2019 17:03

I like it very much. It's not a classic, but it's a classy, elegant name.

It's my favourite from your list.

AlliKaneErikson · 21/03/2019 23:48

I like Zara- I don’t find it a ‘posh’ name but really pretty (possibly ‘classic’, but not in the same way as, say, Elizabeth). I love Lara from your list.
